Salazar Slytherin was a pure-blood wizard of medieval times. He was a Parselmouth (a wizard with the rare ability to speak with snakes) and skilled at Legilimency. He was one of the four founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the former best friend of Godric Gryffindor, who was also a fellow founder. Slytherin didn't trust the Muggle-born students, and he expressed his opinion not to accept them at Hogwarts. However, when the other Hogwarts founders didn't agree, Slytherin left the school and did not return again but not before creating the Chamber of Secrets and concealing a basilisk inside. He died sometime in the Middle Ages.

The Sorting Hat described him as "power-hungry Slytherin" and that he came "from a fen" meaning from a low and marshy or frequently flooded area of land. This could be the reason why he and his family have the rare gift of speaking Parseltongue. It was also said that anyone who can speak Parseltongue was somehow related to Salazar Slytherin. The fens of Eastern England were in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, and adjoining counties, although it was not established that Slytherin came from that particular region.

Salazar Slytherin was known to possess great cunning and determination, qualities he prized in students of Slytherin House. He seemed to stop at nothing to get what he wanted; this was proven when he constructed the Chamber of Secrets to purge Muggle-borns. Slytherin was said to be one of the greatest wizards of his age, with extensive abilities, particularly in Legilimency. When considering sorting a student into Slytherin, the Sorting Hat looked for Slytherin's traits in the student, including cunning, determination, and resourcefulness.

The statue of Salazar Slytherin in the Chamber of Secrets depicts an "ancient and monkey-like" man with a "long thin beard that fell almost to the bottom of his sweeping robes." His beard was white. Marvolo Gaunt, a blood relative, was similarly described as being monkey-like in appearance.

Harry stared at the essay tiredly, twirling around his sugar quill before sighing. Where can I get more information about Slytherin? he thought. Asking Slughorn might be a futile job. Asking Dumbledore would only resort to more confusion because that man seemed to like speaking in riddles. Asking the Slytherin students? He bet that they all already knew the things Harry had written down. He needed more, like his descendants and all. Malfoy seemed to know a lot about Pureblood history. He would've known about the Slytherins!

But then he shook his head. Are you lunatic, Harry? Asking Malfoy? Not in a million years. Instead, he resorted to walking around to collect some ideas for his essay. He didn't even have the slightest idea to why McGonagall would want them to make an essay about the founders of Hogwarts and the fact that he couldn't even choose which founder he wanted to write about! It was all a secret. He couldn't tell anyone and anyone couldn't tell what they got. Harry sighed and walked through the secret passages that the Marauders Map showed to him. How am I supposed to know Salazar's story? There wasn't much written about him in the books unlike the other remaining three.

Suddenly there was a door that appeared out of nowhere in front of him. He immediately checked the Map and found that the door was not documented in the Map, which meant that the Marauders didn't find this door back then. That's suspicious but he supposed because it was too close to the dungeons that they didn't want to explore down here. Harry wouldn't too but he was curious about it and decided to enter the unmarked place-
