"Dad, when will mommy come back home? It's already dark outside," A young girl whimpers. She stares into her father's pained eyes, holding in her own tears.
The man that's crouching in front of her takes hold of both her hands. She can feel his hands trembling violently, causing a thick layer of unease to settle deep within her.
"She-"
The man's voice breaks and he harshly bites his lip to prevent the pool of tears from spilling over. His gaze stays fixed on his daughter's face, trying to distract his thoughts from wandering back to his wife.
"Baby, I can't explain anything right now." He pulls her in for a tight hug as his heart pounds in his chest roughly. After a few seconds of silence, he pulls back again and rests his large hands on her tiny shoulders instead.
"Jangmi, you have to listen very carefully. From now on your name is Lee Jihyun, okay? I'll explain everything when you're a big girl."
The girl senses the fear in her father's shaky voice. Pushing all her questions to the back of her mind, she silently nods to him. He forces a tight smile, one empty of warmth.
"I love you, Jihyun."
