Hearing my words

Chapter 5

The Aydin house was in an uproar as Can stepped into the kitchen. Nihat was pacing back and forth and Mevkibe was sitting at the table crying. When Can walked in Nihat stopped his going back and forth and just looked at the young man. You could tell he was thinking before he spoke, choosing his words carefully.

"Can, I, we have always thought of you as a son but I am sure that Sanem's leaving has to do with you. What happened? What did you do to her to make her leave?"

"I think she decided to leave me before I left her." was all he could say. "Can I read the letter?"

Nihat shook his head yes and Mevkibe handed him the letter.

Dear Anne and Baba,

I am sorry to leave this way but I know in my heart you would have tried to stop me. My heart is broken and the only way I know to heal it will be to walk away from what is causing the pain. I have fault in this also, so don't place all the blame on Can. I know you don't understand what is going on or why Can would break my heart but right now I just need to heal. Can is leaving Istanbul, going away to work with Polen. And even though he will not be here, I am broken inside and staying here with the memories of Can will not allow me to heal.

I need to do this so please try to understand. I am going away and finally write the novel I want to write, I have the story I need to tell now. It is my story, mine and Can's. Don't worry I am not going as far as the Galapagos.

 Just please try to understand I need to leave before I am left. Just give me a little time to find myself and to get settled. I will call you soon.    Seni Seviyorum, Sanem

Can handed her back the letter and sat down beside her.

"I turned the job down, I couldn't leave. I need to make things right between us. Do you know anything about the problems Sanem and I have had?"

"Evet, I know that when she first went to the agency, Emre used her to try and make you leave the agency. He had lied to her and made her believe you were a bad person."

"He did, yes. So many things have happened, after we worked through that and I finally understood that I loved her and could forgive her for that. She went behind my back and sold her cream to a business man named Fabri."

Leyla and Emre waked into the kitchen as he went on "The smell of the cream was like a drug to me. Do you know how I really first met Sanem?"

Mevkibe shook her head no "It was the night of the anniversary party. Somehow Sanem went to sit in the balcony that was meant for me. I was to meet Polen there. When I walked in, it was so dark I couldn't see anything but the shape of a woman standing in the room. Thinking it was Polen I kissed her. I realized as soon as I did,  that this woman was not Polen. Her scent was tantalizing, I wanted to just stand there and breath that wonderful scent for the rest of the night. But, she ran out of the balcony without me finding out who she was. The next day, Guliz was talking  to CeyCey and Sanem about me becoming the boss and in her own truthful and naive way she, without knowing I was standing behind her, ranted on about bosses and their ways. When she realized I was behind her she became quiet and shy and when I looked in her beautiful eyes, I was thinking how I wished that she was my mystery woman. It turns out, I found out she was that woman, the next night at my house, she broke in to steal back a file for Emre that she had accidentally given to me. As she was trying to run out the door, I grabbed her and when she was near, I could smell her scent and I knew, I knew it was her."

"What does that have to do with my she left?" asked Nihat.

"She sold the scent to a business man, recently, she lied to me about giving him that scent. I was furious in my own Can Divit way, I yelled at her and blamed her again for deceiving me."

"She didn't really deceived you, she gave him the recipe for the cream she didn't make a penny, not one cent. She did this because Fabri told her you would live your days out in prison.  He threatened her with that, he knew, she loved you so much, she would have rather lost you then to have you locked up. She knew you wouldn't be able to live locked in prison." Leyla said "But, what you don't know, is she was trying to tell, that day at the mountain hut when Emre and I came and told her our anne was sick, she was going to tell you, but we" she said pointing to herself and then Emre "convinced her not to tell you, to wait."

Can just looked at both Emre and Leyla, shaking his head.

Mevkibe looked at the three young people "It sounds to me that you all need to learn to communicate and listen and not make decisions for others. So why would she think you were leaving with Polen? Why did she think you were leaving her?"

Can took a deep breath "She came to the mountain hut to try to talk to me and overheard Polen talking to me about a job offer and making a new start."
