Pacing across the room wasn't going to fix any of my problems, but at least it was keeping me from marching to my son's quarters with a raised fist.

He'd failed to attend the council meeting. He'd sent a simple message to Hypnos stating that he was not able to make it. There was no apology, no reason for his absence, and when I asked his twin for an explanation as to where Thanatos was in the first place, all I received in return was a maddening shrug and a flippant, 'Busy, most probably'.

Had Thanatos forgotten how important this meet had been? How vital it was to keep his iron fist securely over the lords of the lands, to ensure that they knew who was in charge at all times? Of course he knew. He just seemingly didn't care.

"My queen?" Alexus stood by the entrance to my open lounge, her eyes muddled with worry. I looked up, but my feet kept moving. I knew that if they stopped, I'd start to throw objects into the pool out of frustration. "It's getting late. Is there anything else that you need me to do before I depart?"

"Yes." I snarled, but my anger was not for her. "Light my son's throne on fire. Perhaps then he'll have no choice but to pay attention to it."

Alexus' eyes flashed with an emotion. I saw right through her; she hated him. It was never so obvious though and I wondered what had happened between them both to change that.

Alexus was never a fan of the twins. Oh, make no mistake... She'd definitely been attracted to Thanatos and Hypnos the first moment she'd met them, but her attraction was merely physical. Alexus was clearly more interested in the fairer sex.

Her attraction to them didn't last very long.

When Hypnos began to develop more than a physical attraction to her, she pushed him away almost immediately. His adoration faded and they were left with a bitter taste for each other, but not as bitter as her taste for my other son.

Thanatos never liked her. He loathed her.

Alexus returned the feeling, but recently, her annoyance with him had turned into a silent hatred.

I'd tried to pry as to why, but she was a closed book. Even if I was rather good at noticing small details about people without them even realising it, Alexus was still a very good liar. She was so good, I think she actually believed herself sometimes...

That was dangerous.

"Is this about the meeting today?" Alexus asked, uncertain if she should be conversing with me about the one topic that seemingly always placed me in a bad mood- Thanatos.

Gods. That man...

He was both the best and worst thing on my mind at any given time.

Even when he was a child, he gave me so much grief. He never did what he was told. Thanatos had this knack of doing just the opposite and somehow he managed to get away with it.
