The night sky was dark and moonless

The night sky was dark and moonless.

My eyes scanned the barren and abandoned ruins of Dodona. The field where the old amphitheatre was built was absent and the wildflowers grew free; encircling the ancient ruins in their vines and leaves.

I felt a presence a few feet away. My foot stopped mid-air and I froze. She was lurking there- in the shadows of the tall trees. With a stern tone, I commanded a reply; "What is the purpose of this meeting?"

Hecate moved out from the shadows to meet me. Her cat-like green eyes were still the same; bright and worried. "Hypnos... I'm so glad you came."

"I don't have time for pleasantries. What do you want?" I said with a cold voice.

Hecate's disappointment was clear. She sighed softly and looked to the ground for courage. A thought crossed her mind and I could see she was struggling to decide if she should voice it. The goddess of witchcraft spoke up. "You were never like this."

"Things change." I said dryly.

Hecate didn't believe me. Her eyes were still so concerned for a young man she had no obligation to protect. "I'm sorry for leaving you and your brother to her." She no doubt meant Nyx.

I shook my head and an unamused smile cracked through. "I won't ask again; why am I here?"

"You tell me."

I stared at her as those cryptic words echoed past me. My blood began to boil. Who was she to summon me? I was the first prince of the empire. How dare she?

I whipped around with balled fists and began to walk away from the frustrating witch. Hecate called for my attention. "Hypnos, wait! Why did you come?"

"What do you mean why did I come? You asked!" I growled at her, my eyes wild.

"You came for a reason- not because I asked. You came for something." She remarked softly. Hecate tucked her hands in front of her and licked her lips. "Did you come because of Thanatos?"

"What of him?"

"To help him?" She tilted her head and it reminded me of the way Thanatos did it.

I hesitated. "I can't help him anymore."

"You don't truly believe that." She whispered to me, while her feet moved backwards. She beckoned for me to follow her into the shadows. "Come. I have something to show you..."

I stood still, my mind torn between two directions. Was I going to follow this mad woman into the unknown? A woman, who by the way, was labelled as a possible conspirator against the empire? Or was I going home, to wash away this meeting from my mind?

I'm not sure why I chose the first option, but I did. Perhaps it's the way she annoyed me by thinking that she knew more about Thanatos than I did.
