Nyx had been breathing down my neck the entire day after Thanatos had dodged the rest of the family meeting after the festival.

For a full day, he'd been hiding out in his chambers; adamant on not seeing anyone. Not even Irma or Opis. Something was direly wrong.

The sun was high in the sky as I made my way towards Thanatos' throne room. Opis had mentioned that he'd finally emerged from his cave around noon. I was eager to find out a bit more about where he'd been and what had happened. I knew somehow, it was connected to Aurora. Lately, everything he did was.

The guards bowed as I passed and immediately lifted their spears from blocking the doorway to the backroom.

The throne sat empty, as usual. For an Emperor, Thanatos was rarely seen sitting on his imperial throne. In all honesty, I knew the second he seized control, he wasn't going to be sitting idly by while Nyx and the rest of our family ruled on his behalf.

Another good reason to remove Erebus from the equation early on.

I entered the war room to find Thanatos and Hemera standing beside the large, round table, both a cup of coffee in hand. Hemera was watching his face with worried eyes, while my brother spoke. He stopped mid-sentence when he felt another presence enter the room.

Thanatos lifted his head to meet mine. "Good morning."

I nodded in acknowledgement and moved to the side of the room to pour myself a glass of water. "Morning."

"How did you sleep?" Hemera asked with a small smile.

I shrugged; "Well. How about you both?" I always slept well. It was something Thanatos envied. He'd always had a penchant for insomnia, ever since we were young.

"Fine." Hemera answered and Thanatos took a sip of his black coffee, avoiding the question. He changed the subject; "What do you need?" It bothered me that he always asked that- it was never a case of simply seeing him anymore. There always had to be reason and the reason to just chat and spend time with him was no longer good enough.

"I just wanted to check in. See how you're doing? You left the festival so early."

Thanatos rolled his eyes and I knew this conversation was going to end with an argument. I was not in the mood. Although, something was off. A dark aura hung around him. More like death than ever before. "I'm fine, Hypnos."

"Thanatos... He's just worried." Hemera said softly and glanced back at me. I avoided her eyes.

"Does it really annoy you so much that I care about your well-being?"

"It annoys me that you both are constantly trying to check-up on me like I'm a little child."

Hemera frowned and stood up straight. "Hey... I came here to spend time with you. To chat and-"
