They'd found it.
We knew the second they'd found it.
One of the younger reapers had hit something hard in the ground. It was still covered in dirt and mud, but from the look upon his face, Poseidon and I just knew.
After an unsuccessful and dull few days of waiting for them to find something in the new location, we'd finally struck oil- or whatever the hell Thanatos was looking so desperately for.
Hades had made a turn at the old location in the Dryad forest about a week ago.
It had taken all of my strength to persuade Poseidon not to leap down from our hiding place to embrace his older brother. He was livid with me at first, but I explained to him that the consequences were too great.
Hades seemed content and that was something we should dread.
If Hades was content with his life now, then what force or compelling reason was there for him to change any of it? To remove a new king from his seat? What would he gain?
No. Keeping silent and holding the fragile element of surprise we had was essential to our success. If we found a bargaining chip from these reapers, then we could save Hades from his life of imprisonment.
If we had nothing on our side, then we had nothing to offer for our liberation and his.
Of course, Hades had not arrived to the location without some sort of purpose. He was there to instruct.
We could hear the confusion and curiosity in his own voice, which made it clear that Hades himself had no idea why these reapers were digging in this area in the first place.
"The Emperor wants you to move towards the south. He's sent directions." Hades had handed over a small envelope to Zaul, the leader.
The reaper glanced warily at his outstretched hand, but when he recognised the seal- the sign of an upside down torch- he knew it was from the Emperor and no one else. Only Thanatos had that ring with the infamous symbol on it.
I felt a pang in my chest when I saw it from way up high, in the treetops. It was odd for me- for Poseidon too- how others spoke about him. Thanatos used to be a dear friend; nearly like family. Now, whenever someone mentioned his name or merely his acquired title, I could feel a dark cloud cover my thoughts. He was like the monster under your bed- you were never sure he was there, but just mentioning him made you unsure that he wasn't just waiting for you to step off the edge. I kept my toes away from the ledge, just until I knew for sure that the monster couldn't grab at them from beneath.
My eagle eyes watched the scene and waited for Hades to divulge more, but he merely nodded and glanced around. Zaul noticed the curiosity and stepped in front of him. Ever loyal...
He blocked the view.
Hades received the message, loud and clear. He nodded his head in farewell and backed away; leaving Zaul to stare at him as he departed through his portal.
