There's nothing like the feeling of being completely and utterly alone. The knowledge that you have no one to turn to, no shoulder to cry on, no comforting arms to bury yourself in— it's painful. And it's even more painful when you had all of those things... only to have them ripped away.
Dick Grayson did his best to hold back rough sobs as he limped down a particularly shady Gotham alley, dragging all of his belongings in a duffle along with him. He couldn't believe it. He simply couldn't believe it. How could Bruce do this to him? How could Bruce toss him out like he was just... nothing? Was that the truth? Was he nothing?
That had to be the case. Because why else would Bruce just abandon him? What had he done to deserve this? He thought he'd been a fairly good ward. He thought he'd taken pretty good care of Bruce and Alfred when they needed him. So how could he be so easily forsaken?
"Birdie?" a soft voice got Dick's attention. He whirled around, ready to fight whatever threat was coming for him. However, a threat never came. What did come was a person that would turn out to be his saving grace.
Harley Quinn.
Immediately upon meeting the fifteen-year-old's gaze, the blonde furrowed her brow in concern and knelt down to be eye level with him. "Robin? Are you okay?"
He supposed it was a valid question. He did, after all, look like complete shit. He had gashes all over his body, he was visibly limping, and his hair was matted against his face. It'd been a rough night...
"I don't- I- he- he-" Robin couldn't seem to find the words to answer the anti-hero's question.
"He who?" Harley asked. "And what'd he do, Birdie?"
Robin felt a tear slip down his face and run under his mask, making it painfully clear to his (sorta) friend that whatever was going on was serious.
"Alright," she sighed, grabbing the boy's arm and draping it around her shoulders. "We're gonna getcha all fixed up, ain't we, Birdie? You're gonna be just fine."
Robin's lip quivered as he allowed the blonde to lead him away from the scary-looking alley that would likely have been his demise. "Y- you don't have to do this..." he mustered out, voice cracking a bit.
"Yeah, puddin', I do," she smiled down kindly at the disoriented boy. She grabbed his bag and flung it over her free shoulder. "Do ya' think you can tell your ol' Auntie Harley what's the matter?"
Robin wanted to. He really did. But he feared that even just thinking about the explosive argument that led to his being kicked out would bring him to tears. So, he just weakly shook his head.
"Somethin' to do with Batsy?" Harley inquired, obviously getting an answer when the mentioned name brought a rough sob out of the boy she was helping. She furrowed her brow as she tightened her grip on the teenager, "What'd he do, Birdie?"
Robin's lip quivered. It quivered harder than it had in years. It'd been so long since he'd been in this much pain. And when he had been, he'd always had Bruce there to help him through it. Not anymore...
"He- he- he- he kicked me- he kicked me out," the young acrobat finally managed to choke out.
"Kicked ya' out?" Harley repeated incredulously. "How fuckin' so?"
Robin shook his head, tears endlessly streaming down his face like a waterfall, "Said I was... I was getting too violent. He doesn't- he doesn't trust me. I'm- I'm- I'm not- I'm not allowed to be Robin anymore..."
"Too violent?! Can't trust ya'?!" Harley practically yelled out for all of South Gotham to hear. "Has he looked in a mirror lately?! That- that- that rodent! I'll tear 'em to pieces!" She suddenly turned dead serious and gave a once over of Robin's beaten form, "Did he do this to you, Robin?"
Robin sniffled and hurriedly shook his head, "It- it happened on patrol tonight. This guy— he- he- he was just- he was punching Bats over and over again. I- I- I couldn't control myself! I just got so mad because he was going to take the only parent I had left away from me! So I- I punched him back! And I- and I kept punching! Suddenly, he- he- he wasn't moving anymore and- and B was- he was looking at me like- like- like- like I'd just stabbed him in the back! I don't- it- it doesn't make any sense! I was just- I was trying to protect him!"
Harley stopped walking and turned, pulling the nearly incoherent superhero into her arms. He buried his face into her classic 'Daddy's Little Monster' t-shirt and she ran her fingers through his raven curls. But it seemed like no matter what she did, the boy couldn't calm his uncontrollable sobs or heavy breathing. It seemed he was on the verge of a panic attack.
"It's gonna be okay, Birdie," Harley assured the boy softly, using her best 'Mom-Harley' voice. "Forget the ol' bastard. He never did nothin' for ya' anyway. You come live with Ivy and me, huh? We'll teach ya' to fight crime the fun way."
Robin pulled away with a disbelieving look, tears streaking his flushed cheeks, "Why- why would you want me?"
Harley thought for a moment how to best phrase her words, "'Cause... you're a good kid, Robin. All these years, ya' never once forget to ask me or the other so-called villains how we're doin'. Ya' care about us. It's time someone returned the favor."
Robin hesitated for a moment, but soon took a deep breath and removed his mask. Harley couldn't help but smile at the sight of his sapphire blue eyes shimmering in the moonlight. He looked at her with a genuine look, "Thank you, Harley."
Harley threw an arm around the teen's shoulders, "Ah, don't worry 'bout it, kid." She gave him a mischievous smile, "Y'know, now that I'm basically your mom, ya' think ya' might wanna tell me your name?"
Robin chucked softly through a sniffle. He looked over at anti-hero, "Yeah, alright. What's Batman gonna do? Fire me again?" He took a deep breath before going on, "The name's Richard Grayson, but people call me Dick."
Harley stopped dead in her tracks, but before she could get a word out, Dick spoke up again.
"Yes, I'm that Dick Grayson, and, yes, I do actually go by Dick. Please keep the jokes to a minimum."
Harley laughed loudly, squeezing the boy's cheek (much to his disscontempt), "Well, Dick, it's nice to finally meet ya' after all these years."
Dick gave a small smile, "Same to you... Mom."
Harley actually beamed, "Ah, I'm gonna like havin' you around, kiddo."
