Dick Grayson sighed to himself, carefully shimmying out of his Nightwing suit to avoid the many cuts and bruises he'd gotten on patrol that night. He ran a tired hand down his face as he stumbled his way into the shower, having absolutely no idea that something scarily similar was going on in the apartment next to his.
Wally West had just returned from a patrol in Central City with his Uncle Barry, a nearly healed bullet wound still making him feel like complete and total shit. His head pounded, his wounded stomach stung, and his body felt like it was mere second from collapsing to the floor. At least, until he climbed into the shower to wash away the remaining dirt and blood and heard that beautiful sound.
"thought I found a way, thought I found a way out"
Wally smiled to himself, happy to hear his mystery neighbor's beautiful voice once again.
"but you never go away."
Wally joined in as he always did, "never go away."
The boy on the other side of the way didn't pause for even the briefest second, "so i guess i gotta stay now."
Wally couldn't help but blush at the boy's voice as they went onto the chorus, Wally taking the low part and mystery boy taking the high part.
"oh, i hope some day i'll make it out of here. even if it takes all night or a hundred years. need a place to hide, but i can't find one near. wanna feel alive, outside i can't fight my fear."
Mystery boy sang on, "isn't it lovely, all alone? heart made of glass, my mind of stone."
Wally joined in, "tear me to pieces, skin to bone. hello, welcome home."
The other boy went quiet as Wally started the second verse, "walkin' out of time. lookin' for a better place. something's on my mind. always in my headspace."
Mystery boy joined back in, "but i know someday i'll make it out of here, even if it takes all night or a hundred years. need a place to hide but i can't find one near. wanna feel alive, outside i can't fight my fear."
Wally faded to silence as his counterpart sang out the high notes, "isn't it lovely, all alone? heart made glass, my mind of stone."
Wally joined back in, "tear me to pieces, skin to bone. hello, welcome home."
They went silent for a moment before singing the final verse, "hello, welcome home."
They both faded to silence, running water the only sound to be heard. Wally couldn't help the pink hue that appeared on his cheeks as he tried to picture the owner of the mysterious voice. They'd been doing duets for nearly a year now, but, still, had never once met.
Sure, either one of them could've gone to the other's apartment door and simply knocked, but that would take the mystery and fantasy away. What if the person that owned the voice wasn't the person Wally wanted him to be? What if the reality didn't live up to the fantasy?
