Tears streamed down an eight-year-old Dick Grayson's face as he stumbled down the streets of Gotham, having absolutely no idea where to go or what to do. He was supposed to walk home from school but must've taken a wrong turn because it was night time now and he still had no idea where he was.
Finally, he decided to just take shelter and wait for someone to find him. That seemed like a better plan than just wandering down the street all night-- especially with all those people giving him weird looks. He didn't like that. It made him feel uncomfortable.
Rough sobs wracking his body, the young boy slid down a brick alley wall, pulling the hood of his jacket over his head to block out the rain that had already soaked him head to toe. He cradled his backpack to his chest, searching for some kind of comfort. He wished more than anything that he was cuddling on the couch with Bruce, Peanut held close to his chest. Maybe Alfred would be fixing them some ice cream to eat after they finished their movie. But, no. Dick just had to go and get himself lost. What if he never found his way home? What if he never saw Bruce again? What if-
"Well, hey, there, sugar," a woman with a thick accent and widely colored pig tails suddenly appeared in front of the little boy with a kind smile.
(sentences with a comma after every word scare me and they should scare you too)
Dick sniffled, looking up at the woman with watery, blue eyes. "Wh- who are you?"
"I'm Harley," the lady chirped with a wide grin. She seemed nice. A little crazy, maybe, but still nice. "You're Wayne's kid, ain't ya?"
Dick nodded, tears still streaming steadily down his cheeks. "I'm Dick."
"Well, of course you are!" Harley exclaimed with a laugh. Her blue eyes were wide with mischief as she cocked her head to the side a bit, "Say, I don't know much about kids but ain't ya supposed to be home from school by now? Whatcha doin' out here in the rain for?"
"I- I got lost," Dick cried, holding his backpack closer.
Harley frowned at this, giving the boy a sympathetic look, "Well, I could help ya get home if ya want. Wayne Manor's just a mile or two down the road."
"Really?" Dick asked, eyes wide eyes with hope.
"Sure!" Harley exclaimed. She held out a hand to help the boy up. "Let's go, ankle biter. I'm sure old Brucey's off his rocker with worry for you."
"Thank you, Harley," Dick smiled politely as he started off after the blonde woman.
Harley hummed, throwing an arm around Dick's shoulder, "Anytime, kiddo, anytime."

An eleven-year-old Dick Grayson was shoved to the ground in front of his school, three eighth graders standing over him with evil smirks. They began tearing him apart, kicking into his stomach and his face and his legs. They made even inch of him hurt until he was sure he would never get up again. That is, until his favorite voice rang out out of nowhere.
"Unless ya wanna lose yer eyeballs, I suggest ya step away from the boy!"
Dick, blood trickling down his cheek and lip, managed a smile as, through blurred vision, he saw his favorite person on earth, Harley Quinn, approach his bullies with a pocket knife pointed in their direction. It was about two seconds before they were running for their lives and Harley was leaning down to help her surrogate little brother up.
"You okay, kiddo?" she asked, being all motherly as she carefully inspected him for any fatal injuries. He chuckled weakly, laying a careful hand on his aching ribs.
"I'm alright, Harley. Thanks for saving me."
Harley let out a soft hmph, "I really wish ya would let me kill 'em. They're probably gonna die in prison anyway. Why can't I just get it over with?"
"Because," Dick laughed, "murder is bad. I don't want you to go to prison. Who would walk me home from school?"
Harley hummed, letting out a soft sigh, "Well, I 'spose ya got me there."
Dick latched himself onto the woman, burying his face in her shirt, "I love you, Harley."
The blonde had to hold back a squeal as she ran her fingers through the little boy's raven curls, "I love you too, Birdie."

Dick turning sixteen had been a big ordeal. It meant he was getting his license, which, in turn, meant he was no longer walking home with Harley.
The woman had been very supportive about it, saying she would still see Dick every day as he was her only ride to and from work. Even if the so called 'work' was illegal, Dick still looked forward to it. Harley was his best friend, his big sister. Seeing her was the best part of his day. So, every day as soon as he got out from school, he climbed in his fancy sports car and drove over to pick Harley up. And that's exactly what he was doing on the day it all went wrong.
The first thing Dick noticed was the driver beside him swerving. He then noticed the large bridge coming up in front of them. And, shortly after that, he glanced over just in time to see the driver next to him pass out.
That definitely wasn't good.
The unconscious driver's car jerked over and slammed into the side of Dick's, making his head slam against the window with a loud thud. He was just conscious enough to know something was going on, but not enough to be able to do anything about it. His vehicle, going a solid sixty or seventy miles per hour, swerved into the guardrail and completely took it out, beginning a swan-dive into the nasty river down below. Or, at least, he thought he was. But, in fact, it was just his car that was doing that. Dick himself was being carefully cradled in a certain anti-hero's arms.
"Birdie?!" she exclaimed, gently hitting the side of his face to bring him out of his daze. After a moment or two, it worked. He groaned softly, blinking his eyes several times to get the world to stop spinning. "Jesus, kid, you scared me!"
"Sorry," Dick mumbled, head throbbing. He was pretty sure his head was bleeding as he felt something drip down the side of his face.
"That's it," Harley hissed, tossing Dick over her shoulder and beginning to stomp off. "I'm takin' you back to that shitty ass father of yours and I'm kicking' his ass. I told him lettin' you drive so soon was a bad idea. Look at what happened! One drunk driver almost killed you! Nope! Nuh, uh! Brucey's gettin' a piece of my mind!"
"Harley?" Dick grumbled out, squeezing his eyes shut in an attempt to keep from throwing up.
"Yes, Pumpkin?"
"Please talk quieter," Dick pleaded softly, getting a laugh from Harley.
"Will do, munchkin." She lowered her voice, "Y'know, if I wasn't such a 'criminal,' I'd take custody of ya myself. What does that flyin' rodent do? Putcha in danger every night? Ridiculous! He's a terrible father! I'd be an amazin' ma! Ain't that right, sugar?"
Dick smiled a bit to himself, "Yeah, that's right, Harley."
