𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆: The BatBros ask Dick about what happened when he quit being Robin, making him remember things he doesn't want to.
(i'm going by the nightwing comics on this 'cuz those are what i know best. if you haven't read, essentially what happens is dick was pretty busy w the team + work + robin making him  late to a mission with bruce. that mission had gone bad and put bruce and the kid he was saving in danger. everything worked out okay, but when dick and bruce got back to the batcave, bruce told dick he was fired, told him to get the hell out, and basically disowned him. dick was 18-19 at the time. he ran off and rejoined haly's circus before realizing his destiny as nightwing.
hope it doesn't disappoint <33)

"Hey, Grayson?" Damian pulled his big brothers attention away from his book report.

"What's up, Lil' D?" Dick asked with a loving smile, ruffling the younger boy's hair.

After giving the appropriate mini bat-glare for the disruption of his hair's perfect position, Damian went on with his question. "I've been wondering why you gave up the Robin title. I mean, you're always talking about how much you loved it. Why would you quit something that meant so much to you?"

Dick's facial expression fell a bit. He sighed softly, obviously thinking a moment. When he did finally speak, it was with a hesitant tone. "Well, I, uh, I didn't exactly quit, Dami."

Damian furrowed his brow in confusion, cocking his head to the side, "If you did not quit, then that would mean Father..."

Dick cleared his throat anxiously, "Fired me. Yeah."

Damian definitely did not understand this. He'd heard many stories of Dick's Robin days, but he'd never heard this one.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Jason, who was sitting across the room with Tim, turned around with raised eyebrows. "He fired you? How is that even possible? You're his little golden boy. I mean, I've fucking killed people and he still hasn't fired me."

Dick chuckled, despite the pain and anger buried deep within his eyes. "I wasn't always his golden boy and he wasn't always so understanding. God... I was so busy back then, I just could not be the Robin Bruce wanted me to be. One mission, I showed up late and nearly got Bruce and a kid killed. When we got home, Bruce told me I was fired and kicked me out."

Tim furrowed his brow in disbelief, he and Jason moving closer to their other two brothers. "He just kicked you out? For what? Being late to a mission?"

Dick nodded, a half-hearted smile on his face. "It wasn't... fun. But," he cleared his throat, "I landed on my feet, luckily. I went back with the circus where I realized what I was really meant to do. I became Nightwing and started protecting the citizens of Blüdhaven."

Damian was angry— very angry. "How dare Father kick you out like that?! You didn't have a home, you didn't have any other family, you didn't have Robin! How could he do that?!"

Jason and Tim stared at the youngest in shock, surprised by his rare emotional outburst. Dick, however, knew Damian enough to not be surprised by his emotions coming out anymore. If anything, he thought it was sweet that the kid cared.
