Cody had only arrived back to her one bedroom apartment when Jack had requested a video call. The Morgan woman had to reject the call, opting to shower first before calling her best friend back.

It had been three days since the US team had went their separate ways, and Cody was happy that she caught a flight home with Alex,  soon-to-be-official mother, Tobin and Horan. They arrived back at Portland in the middle of the night, their drives home were quick. They got back into the swing of all things Thorns pretty quickly.

Cody would be lying if she ever said she had second thoughts about being in the same team as her mother. Where Alex was excited, almost to the point of a puppy, Cody was anxious and insecure. No matter how many years had passed by, no matter how hard she trained, how much she proved that she was worthy of her place on any team, Cody always felt that her surname was the only redeeming quality she had to offer. Not that she ever told Alex that.

Cody grabbed a bottled water from her fridge before calling Jack back. The called, as predicted only rung one time before her overexcited best friend's grin greeted her, the sun shining behind her back.

"Damn. It looks beautiful in Texas." Cody smiled, simply happy that her childhood friend was happy.

"It is. It's a great day, everyone's happy. Minus your girlfriend, who is sulking." Jack chuckled.

"What's wrong?" Cody asked, protective instincts taking over her common sense.

"Nothing." Jack chuckled. "She's being dramatic, I think she just misses you."

Cody smiled as Jack clearly walked off to a more private area.

"I think she just needs to get laid." Her blonde best friend chuckled before her camera flipped and Cody could see Kristie sulking as she sat on the ground, flipping off Jack. "Yep. Definitely needs to get laid. Hope you can fix that when you and the Thorns come to Houston."

"Is that why you called me? To talk about my girlfriend and our sex life?"

"You mean 'lack of' sex life?" Jack winked.

"Fuck you, Carter!" Kristie yelled as the camera flipped back around to the Idaho native who was grinning maniacally.

"You're the worst." Cody chuckled. She wanted to be angry but she was happy that her girlfriend and her best friend were getting along after all the bumps in the road.

"You both love me." Jack smiled, and was met with nothing but silence from both women who somehow knew when to team up without discussing it. "You guys suck."

Cody was distracted by a knock on her door, and slowly dropped from her kitchen island to the floor before walking to the front door.

"I do love you, Jack." Cody smiled at her childish best friend as she continued to tease Kristie.

"See, told you so. I'm gonna steal your girl." Jack laughed, as the sun beat against her face, illuminating her blonde hair.

"I'll be sure to tell Christen." Kristie smiled sarcastically before taking Jack's phone. "I love you, baby. I'll call you later."

"I love you, too. Can't wait."

As Kristie handed Jack her phone back, Cody answered her door only to find nobody there.

"The fuck..." Cody mumbled, sticking her head out the front door, a frown etched on her face as she glanced up and down the street to find nothing out of the ordinary.

"What?" Jack asked, all playfulness in her tone dissipating, immediately catching Kristie's attention.

"What's going on?" The Mewis woman asked, standing shoulder to shoulder with Jack, both of their concerned faces filled with concern.
