I sip my water, watching my mom's face after telling her about my girlfriend, her mouth agape, she hasn't uttered a word for a few minutes.
"Mom?" I poke her face, checking if she's responsive. The only movement I get is her brows furrowing.
"She's...Are you for real, Cody?" She finally asks, forcing me to bite back my sassy response.
"Look, I get that you don't all get along, with the National Team rivalries, but-"
"Does she make you happy?" Alex cuts me off, seemingly ignoring my entire argument.
"She really does, mom." I sigh, trying to stop the grin from growing on my face, but I fail when my mom smiles at me.
"I want to meet her." She tells me, and the smile falls from my face immediately, and she continues. "I mean it, Cody. I'm your mother, and I want to meet your girlfriend."
"Ooooh, me too!" A new voice interrupts. My mom and I turning to find Jeri standing a few feet away, a scary smile on her face, but she's not alone. My aunt explains when she notices my glance shift to my friend. "Oh. I found this Canadian creature at the airport, she told me she knew you. I didn't believe it until she showed me a picture of you two, and you didn't look like you were being help against your will, so I let her hitch a ride." Jer concludes, ignoring the odd looks she gets from Jordyn. "Cody! I missed you!" My aunt squeals, closing the distance and pulling me out of the booth, into a bone-crushing hug.
"I missed you too, Jer." I mumble into her shoulder.
"Duh. I'm the best." She ruffles my hair before greeting Alex and sitting beside her. "So, you have a girlfriend?"
I don't answer her, I watch her carefully, while stealing a few glances at my mom.
"Why are you even here?" My mom kicks my shin under the table, narrowing her eyes at me.
"I told Alex I was flying out." Jeri tells me, and my mom shrugs when I give her a questioning look.
"Thought she was lying." Alex states, ignoring the elbow to her arm from her sister. I take the moment to ignore my family, and finally greet my friend.
"Hey, my little American." Jordyn grins, hugging me momentarily before pulling away.
"Hi, my freakishly tall Canadian." I laugh off the slap to my arm and let Jordyn slid into the booth first, and I sit next to her with my mom and Aunt taking up the other side.
"But...why are you here?" I immediately feel the tension when the words leave my mouth, and I suddenly don't need an answer. I clear my throat, before standing and walking to Dolly and paying for the meal my mom and I had. I don't wait for my relatives and Jordyn as I make my way out of the diner.
"Cody." I freeze at my mom's voice, not that it matter's, I'm at the rental anyway. "Give us a minute." My mom doesn't speak until Jeri and Jordyn leave. "Listen to me, baby. We're not asking you to tell us what happened, we just want to be here for you."
"I just hate feeling like this." I mumble. My head drops and Alex wraps me up in a hug, forcing me to relax.
"Like what, baby?"
"Weak. Helpless." I try and pull away, but she doesn't let me and next thing I know two more sets of arms are wrapped around me.
