"Fuck it...might be my last"
"How was the flight?" Rachel asked as Cody put her luggage in the trunk of the English player's car.
"Long," Cody exaggerates, exhaustion taking over and making her dramatic. "It was okay. This kid wouldn't stop kicking my seat. Little shit." Morgan grumbled as Rachel laughed.
"I thought you'd get along well with people your own age." Daly joked, laughing off the glare she received from Cody and starting her car.
"Can we stop for food? I'm so hungr-"
"I already picked you up something." Rachel interrupted, grabbing the greasy paper bag from the backseat without taking her eyes off the road and handing it to Cody as the younger girl's stomach grumbles.
Looking into the bag, Cody asks, "How did you know what I like?"
"Kristie told me." Rachel shrugs, glancing at Cody as she begins to eat.
"Did you tell her I was here?"
"No, she doesn't know."
"Thanks for this, Rachel." Cody speaks, breaking the short silence between the two.
It was awkward, for both women, each knowing their pasts and run ins with one another. The only sounds in the car was the quiet background music, so when Rachel pulled up curbside outside her apartment she shared with Jack, both girls were internally happy.
Leaving the luggage in the trunk for now, Rachel escorted a sleepy Cody indoors, to find her girlfriend on the couch, sitting upside down.
"So...you're both children." Rachel interrupts her girlfriend's odd choice of seating while she watched the Trailblazers game against the Warriors. "How can you even?"
"It's so much more informative this way." Jack mutters as she refuses to take her eyes off the screen until a body sits beside her. Assuming it's Rachel, Jack continues watching the screen. It's only when the other person sits parallel to her, upside-down, too, that Jack registers the brown hair and tears herself from the game.
"Holy shit! Cody!" Jack yells, attempting to stand up but forgetting that she's sitting like a child and so falls to the ground in a heap.
"You used to be so graceful - what happened?" Cody jokes, accepting the tight embrace of her friend's arms as they wrap around her and spin her around.
"What the fuck are you doing here? How did you get here? Did you pay the cab, cause we both know what you're like."
"I tried, the driver wouldn't take my tip." Cody huffs.
"Your tip was that we should drive to Walmart for more ketchup." Rachel chuckles, stealing a kiss from Jack before sitting on the couch.
"Wait, you got her from the airport?" Jack asks, sitting on the coffee table to look at Rachel who nods. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"For this moment right here," Rachel gestures to Cody, implying the small moment that the best friend's had. "Besides, she made me promise to shut up."
"It's true, but it's not cause I didn't want you to know." Cody sits down beside Rachel to talk to Jack, "It's 'cause you can't keep your mouth shut and I have some plans I don't want ruined."
"Plans? Secrets? I feel so left out." Jack mumbles, pouting at her friend hoping to get any kind of information.
"Did I mention I love you?" Cody smiles, lightly slapping Jack before standing and moving to the front door to retrieve her bags from Rachel's car.
"It's Kristie, isn't it?" Jack asks, and Cody turns to find her friend standing with her arms crossed over her chest. Rachel stands to go to the kitchen, leaving the childhood friends alone.
"Help me with my bags." Cody motions, speaking quietly so Rachel doesn't hear.
Jack doesn't need any further encouragement and runs out of the house to her girlfriend's car, "Spill."
"Yes, I'm here to see Kristie." Cody starts and Jack silently nods, knowing that it can't be the only reason for the visit. "I'm guessing you know about...my...well, my-"
"Relapse." Jack interrupts, stopping Cody from falling over her words any longer. There's no judgement in Jack's voice.
"Yeah...well, there's a really good clinic here. It shares a building with some of the best physios in the country, so I discussed everything with Mark and the others in Portland and we all agreed that if I'm serious about playing again then I need the best."
"And are you serious about playing again?" Jack asks, leaning against Rachel's car as she studies Cody's face.
"I am. If it's possible, then I want to at least try. It's one of the few things that keep me sane, and if I'm sane and stable then I can control my addiction."
"Wow. Talk about dominos." Jack mutters before wrapping Cody in another hug. "I'm proud of you, Maxi. I'll be here for you every step of the way."
"Thanks, Jack." Cody smiles, kissing her friend's head before pulling away and getting her luggage. The two friend's walk side by side back into Jack's apartment.
"So, Kristie?" Jack smirks as the two sit back on the couch - right side up - followed by Rachel.
"Real subtle, babe." Daly mocks her girlfriend, making Cody nod in agreement.
"Yes, Kristie."
