"Each man is the architect of his own destiny"

"Morning, Joe." I greet my boss, sitting at the desk in his office when he motions for me to do so."Morning, Cody. Thanks for coming in a little early." He starts, his Italian accent mixing nicely with the English drawl he's adopting. "I have some news that I wanted to talk to face to face."
I try and judge what's about to happen next but his facial expression remains neutral, almost stoic. Determining it unreadable, I cave in and continue the conversation, despite the nerves in my stomach begging me not to.
"Okay, so what's up?" I ask, trying to act nonchalant, which fails when Joe chuckles softly.
"We have a couple offers for you." He holds up two sheets of paper, one in each hand. "One is a loan offer, it will run for a season and then you'll come back here. The other-" He waves one of the sheets and takes a breath. "-one is a permanent move. I'd love to keep you, but my hands are tied on this decision, the board already accepted. You hold all the cards now, you can accept the loan, the transfer or reject them both and stay here, in London. I need your decision in three days max."
Joe hands me both sheets, letting me have all the information I need to make an informed decision, and he dismisses me, telling me to go home for the day, which will no doubt raise questions with my teammates.

"Okay, so we're agreed on something simple, nothing extravagant?" I ask Tobin over FaceTime, the only way we can discuss our pending wedding, unless we're at camp."We are-" She begins, only to be interrupted when Blue begins barking, followed by the bark of another dog. Furrowing my brow, I stand and move to the front door, opening it just as Ali's hand was about to make contact. "Who is it?" Tobin asks, and I realize my phone is pointed to the wall.
"Lex, your door sounds a lot like Tobin." Ash mutters, glancing at my door with a confused look when I hold my phone up for them to see her, the sound of her laughter filling the silence as Ash rolls her eyes.
"I'll let you go babe, but we need to talk about this."
"I know, love you."
Hanging up with Tobin, I enter the kitchen where my Orlando teammates have made themselves at home, the backdoor open for the dogs.
"How is the fiancée?" Ali asks, the irony not lost on me as I glance at the 'keeper in the room.
"She's good." I check the time on my phone. "On her way to practice."
"And how's my favorite Morgan?" Ali asks, a sly grin on her face.
"I'm fine."
"You know I mean Cody!" I chuckle along with Ash as Ali raises her voice in frustration.
"As far as I know, she's fine."
It's been a few days since I got a weird call from her, she didn't give up a lot of details, only that she had a meeting with her Coach and she has a decision to make. Since then, it's been radio silence. She doesn't answer my calls, but she sends me generic texts letting me know that she's alive.
"I miss that kid." Ali mumbles, her head resting in her hands, I feel myself nodding along in agreement.

"So, that's it? You're not even going to fight for her?!" I ask Kelley, my voice rising due to the frustration pulsing through my veins. "You know how Hope gets, she's hard headed and-"
"Jack." Kelley interrupts, the stern tone of her voice stopping me more than anything, as it's a tone I haven't heard from her. "Drop it."
"No. You're my mom, I want you to be happy." I mutter, frowning as my line of sight drops to the tiled flooring of the kitchen before I feel Kelley's arms wrap around me.
"She's your mom, too-"
"Yeah, and she's being an idiot!"
"Jack, stop it!" Kelley finally breaks and yells at me, effectively knocking the air from my lungs as I stare at her shocked. "It's me she broke up with, not you and you will not treat her differently, got it?!"
"Yes ma'am."
I watch in silence as Kelley leaves the kitchen, heading down the hall to her room. The sound of her shower running, follows.

I throw my kitbag in my trunk, closing it before turning, my mind set on getting behind the wheel and getting home as soon as possible, but my plans are quashed when I pivot to find Rachel behind me, standing sheepishly.
"Hey, K." She sighs.
"Hey." I shift on my feet, clearly uncomfortable. "What's up?"
"I was just...do you wanna get dinner with me tomorrow?" She breathes out. Her nervousness isn't a side to her I've witnessed before, and for some reason it only makes me feel increasingly uneasy.
"Uh..." I stall, my mouth almost agreeing when Cody's face flashes through my mind. "I'm sorry Rach, but no."
My response leaves her stunned, obviously part of her thought I'd agree to go with her, whether it was a date or not, but my mind is set on another girl.
I finally make it to the driver's side door, and slide in behind the wheel. Letting my engine roar to life, I smile to myself as I once again, think of Cody.
"That girl..."

I take a deep breath as I stand outside Joe's office. It's been three days, and he needs an answer. He hasn't been on my case about it, only sending me subtle nods throughout practice as a reminder.
As suspected, my teammates were filled with questions, and unfortunately for them, I didn't have any answers that I was allowed to tell them. I take one last deep breath before I let my knuckles knock on the door, and hearing a faint 'come in', I open the door and stand behind the chair I was seated in just days ago.
"I've made my decision..."
A/N - Just a filler for ya, lovely.
