"Fuck 'em, girl."

"Okay, it's the last game before we break from Christmas, we'll be heading to Orlando--"
We listen to Mark continue the small team talk at the end of our light training session before we go home and pack for our flight to Orlando, it's nothing we haven't heard before so I forgive myself when I drift away from the one sided conversation and my attention lands on Cody.
I'm still pretty much stuck in the middle of her and her mother's issues. It's mostly because Cody doesn't want to talk to Alex and Alex just doesn't take the hint. Not that I can blame her, a good mother wouldn't just quit.
"Got that, Heath?" My coach's voice brings me back to the present, and I make eye contact with him but feel everyone else watching us.
"Yes."
"Okay, ladies. That's all for today, I expect to see you all int he airport before 7." He projects, sounding strict. "Tobin. A word."
I walk with Mark to the side of the field, as everyone else starts to leave, and we're out of earshot of anyone trying to listen in.
"What's going on with you? I've never had to call you out like that, and your play during our pick-up was sloppy. Should I be worried?"
"No, I'm sorry. I just didn't sleep well last night, I'll be okay."
He stares at me, clearly internally contemplating if he should let it go or push for more answers. Thankfully he decides to drop it, because I don't like lying to him.

"Who is Max?" Kristie asks as she sits across the table from Rachel and I. We're having coffee before catching a flight to Seattle later.
"He's Bobby's-"
"Who's Bobby?" Rachel asks this time, and I make eye contact with Kristie, both of us hearing the slight jealous tone of her voice.
"He went to school with me and Cody. They live in Orlando-"
"So that's why Cody and Max are all over each other's instagrams?" Kristie asks, trying to sound neutral, but failing.
"Guess so, but relax. He's gay, she's gay, nothing to worry about." I smile as Mewis narrows her eyes at me. "Both of you, not just you Mewis."
I haven't had the time to have a decent conversation with my best friend about my situation. How I ended up with the one woman that would piss me off when she would get in Cody's way. The truth about my relationship with Christen. Why I moved, and why I chose Houston.
"You good?" Rachel whispers, breaking me from my thoughts, but not loud enough to alert Kristie.
"Yeah. Just miss Cody, feel like I haven't spoken to her for years."
"Dramatic." Rachel laughs as she takes my hand. "You're spending the holidays with her though, right?"
"Yeah-"
My phone cuts me off, as the IG icon pops up.
"Speak of the devil."
"The hell..?"

"I'm sure it's an innocent reply, Alex. Don't worry about it-"
"How can I not? My daughter won't talk to me and now she's talking about how she wants to go back to London? She even calls it her home."
"Calm down," Ash insists as she steps between Alex and I, overprotective as usual. "Ali is right, stressing about it won't change anything. She'll be here in a few hours, and you'll talk to her. She's not gonna run away forever, she has to grow up and talk this out."
I agreed, wholeheartedly, but a small voice in the back of my head asked - would she?
A/N - Filler chapter, next update later. I'll propose to whoever gets MMIW to 200K reads 😂
