"Don't play around with love."
- GATES, Kevin
"What in the fresh hell is this?" Jeri announces as she throws open the door to Cody's private room. Alex was still where Jack and Kristie left her, rooted to the ground, standing between Cody and her father like an immovable barrier.
"Jeri, not now." Alex grits out, not taking her eyes off of the only "man" in the room.
"Oh, hellooo!" Cody grins, the drugs still potent in her system. "I missed you!"
"Hey kid. Just a second." Jeri holds up a single digit to her niece, before standing beside Alex and facing the man who hurt her sister. "The fuck you doing here?"
"This has nothing to do with you, this is between me and Alex." The man grits out, his eyes quickly glancing to a raging Jeri before coming back to an eerily calm Alex.
"She's my sister, that's my niece, so it's everything to do with me. Get the fuck out of here."
The man ignores the newly arrived Morgan, as well as the others who have trickled into the room - Jack, Kristie, Rachel, Tobin, Krashlyn and Pam.
"You heard her. Get out."
Turn on his heel to come face to face with an angry Pamela, he finally listens and leaves the family in the room. Silence falls on the group - all except Cody.
"BATMAN! NANA NANA NANANANANANANANA." Cody sings, becoming stuck on a loop until Jeri slaps a hand over her niece's mouth.
"Okay, Alex. Who did this?" Jeri asks, her hand snapping away from Cody after the youngster licked the palm of her hand. She wipes her hand on Cody's bed before crossing her arms. "They're your teammates. I need names, addresses and directions to the nearest hardware store."
"Jeri, I can't-"
"You're right." Jeri cuts Alex off. "I can ask Google where the nearest hardware store is."
"Ignore her." Pam insists, patting Alex's shoulder as she takes a seat beside her and nearer Cody. "Give us a minute girls." She smiles at the others in the room and whispers a small thanks when Krashlyn, Jack, Kristie and Rachel leave the family and Tobin alone. "Your sister is just angry, we all are, but Cody is alive and breathing, that's the important thing. So both of you calm down."
"Grandma, when did you get here?" Cody asks, her head lopping to the side and flashing a goofy grin.
"I just got here, baby girl." Pam smiles at her grandchild, the same grandchild she never thought she would ever meet, and this definitely isn't the way she thought she would see Cody for just the second time. "How are you feeling, sweetheart?"
"I'm good. Just dandy. Is that offensive to say?" Cody asks, her face becoming slack but serious for a miniscule of time. "Oh who cares!" She groans before turning to Jeri. "I know their names." She winks at her aunt, who grins in return, ignoring Alex and her reprimands.
The small family enjoyed each other's company. It had been a while since they were all together and although this wasn't the best circumstance, they were happy none the less. Happy that they had this time together. Happy that Cody was going to be okay in the sense that she was alive. Sure she may not be able to pursue the career she set out to fulfill, but she was in all intents and purposes healthy.
Jack and Rachel came back to the room after almost an hour. Cody was too out of it to notice how exhausted her best friend was. The same girl who took her to that USWNT game years ago. It was because of Jack that Cody was here right now, with her mom and family.
Pamela left to get some decent coffee, waving off her own daughter's attempts to help, Tobin tagged along to help her future mother-in-law, while Krashlyn went home. Jeri took her mother's seat next to Alex, allowing Jack and Rachel to sit on the other side of Cody's bed, their backs to the door.
By this time, Cody was beginning to drift in and out. She fought against falling asleep, refusing to let go of her best friend's hand.
"Jack?" Cody attempts at whispering, but it came out as a soft yell.
"Yeah?"
"I wanna cuddle." Cody grumbles, pushing out her bottom lip to give her best friend a pout, much to the amusement of everyone in the room.
Wordlessly, Jack climbed into her friend's hospital bed, leaning her head on Cody's shoulder as Rachel fixed the blanket, covering the best friends.
"Jack?" Cody speaks again, cuddling into her best friend. "Wanna know a secret?"
"Always." Jack grins, assuming that the apparent secret was something completely ridiculous and goofy.
"I love Kristie." Cody admits, not surprising anyone - even Jeri. Cody, Jack and Rachel didn't see or hear the door open, but Alex and Jeri did. They watched Kristie enter the room silently, watching the Dash player's eyes widen as she listens to the last words out of Cody's mouth before she falls asleep; "I'm gonna marry that girl."
