"So you're coping well? I mean, with moving back home and getting your second call up."
"I am."
"Really?" I ask, raising a brow in skepticism.
"Yes, mom, really." Jack chuckles, shrugging slightly. I stare at her a little longer, but she doesn't crumble. "You made it easy to settle in Utah, and you were here when I got my first call up in January. I'm doing good, honestly."
"Have you heard from Cody?" I take note of the solemn expression on her face, but I can't place it.
"No, not for a week now. I know she's working hard, but I miss her. I haven't seen her since she flew home for her 18th."
We're in the hotel conference room waiting on everyone else to freshen up after our early morning workout in the gym. Jill insisted we gathered for an announcement, but we all have a good idea what it's about.
During our session yesterday, Pinoe pulled up short and had to be escorted from the field, judging but her hand on the back of her thigh, she pulled her hamstring.
We're expecting to be told she'll be flying home for treatment and won't be able to play in our upcoming friendlies against Australia and Sweden.
Kristie and Alex are the first two to show up, and much to my surprise, Jack doesn't seem remotely bothered by it. Maybe because her girlfriend is in town and she's just too happy to give a damn. I watch in confusion when Kristie takes the seat next to Jack as Alex sits beside me.
"Hey." The forward mutters, resting her head in my shoulder and letting out a yawn.
"Tired?"
"No."
"I still can't believe Jill actually called you up." Sam interrupts, sliding in to sit on the unoccupied seat on Kristie's other side.
"Thanks." Kristie deadpans, ignoring the laughter that erupts from her sister as the rest of the team file into the room.
"Okay everybody." Jill's voice booms, reverberating off the walls and flying back at my face to slap me. "Bad news, Pinoe won't be able to play, she's packing right now and will be on her way home"
"Ugh, now I don't have a roommate." Jack mumbles from beside me. "Oh, wait. Yay!"
Jill talks for another few minutes before she abruptly leaves, mentioning something about calling up a replacement for Pinoe's spot on the roster.
"How is Cody doing in London?" Allie asks Alex, who is now resting her head on Tobin's shoulder.
"She's doing good. She's a starter, but she's not a forward anymore, she's a midfielder. She seems to love it, though-"
Alex is cut off by Jack's phone going off, seemingly on repeat, before Kristie's phone joins in. They look at their phones, both sets of eyes going wide before Jack mumbles, "What the fuck?!"

"Keep going! Don't you dare stop!" Leah yells at me, trying to motivate me as I reach the last stretch on my time, the treadmill threatening to throw me against the wall behind me.
