"I don't know what you had in mind,
But here we stand on opposing sides,
Let's go to war."

"Breathe, Alex." Ali encourages as she stands from her chair in the waiting room to guide me to a seat. "She just got out of surgery, they'll let you see her soon."
"I know...I know."
Before my mind can begin to race again, the doors fly open, making unforgiving contact with the walls behind them, and in storms Jack, clearly fresh off a plane with Rachel and Kristie in pursuit.
"Right. Where is she?"
"She just got out of surgery-"
"No. Not Cody." Jack cuts me off, fury showing in her eyes. "The little bitch that hurt her!"
"Jack, you need to calm down..." Rachel trails off, clearly intimidated, though she shouldn't be, she has seen this side of Jack before, when she tried to come between Cody and Kristie's relationship.
"I was calm on the plane!" Jack whirls around, prepared to fight, before she sets her eyes on Rachel who stands firm. With Jack's back to me I can't see her face, but her shoulders sag significantly, the fire leaving her system as she utters quietly. "That's my best friend, Rach."
" I know, baby, but being angry and wanting revenge won't help her. She needs you here-"
"Uh, quick question." Ashlyn stands, walking toward the surprise couple with caution. "When the fuck...How did this happen?" She motions between the two, confusion showing on her face.
"Not now." Jack mumbles, walking away from Ashlyn and towards a free seat in the private waiting room, Rachel following behind her as Kristie stands in front of me, her eyes on the door.
"How is she?" Kristie asks, not risking looking at me, not wanting to take her eyes away from the point of entry.
"I don't know yet." I mumble, before Ashlyn speaks up again, following Jack and Rachel around the room despite Ali trying to halt her movements.
"We have time. Now, how did this happen?" Ashlyn asks again.
Jack takes a deep breath as Rachel takes her hand, and while my mind is focused on Cody and the results of her surgery, I would be lying if I said I wasn't the least bit curious as to how my daughter's best friend became an item with my daughter's ex's...ex?
Check the box for complicated.
"It was when I moved south." Jack breathes out, sneding out the message that this is a more emotional story for her than it seems. "After all the shit with Kelley, and Hope, I was just desperate to get away. From both of them. I didn't care where I went. My mood was...bad, to say the least." Jack chuckles humorlessly as Kristie and Rachel smile at the youngster. "It didn't improve when I got to Houston. The heat didn't help, neither did my ride from the airport when I landed."
