"I never thought people could fuck you up as bad as drugs"
- EKOH
As the rest of the national team leave Alex and Tobin alone in the conference room, the tension seems to rise almost immediately.
"Were you ever going to tell me?" Alex asks softly, leaning forward slightly.
A million thoughts a minute travel through Tobin's coffee fuelled brain as she studies Alex's face for any telltale signs of what the hell is going on. Instead she opts for playing dumb.
"Tell you about what?" Tobin mutters, suddenly feeling small under Morgan's gaze.
"About Cody..." Alex trails off, hoping that Tobin would atleast provide some insight, but she doesn't. "About her using again."
Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit. The only words going through Heath's mind as she scrambles for an explanation.
"Uh...you knew?"
"And so did you, apparently." Alex states, leaning back in her chair, crossing her arms over her chest as she continues to hold eye contact with Tobin.
Tobin sighs as a sickening feeling settles in her stomach, "Okay. I knew."
"I know, why did you not tell me? Didn't that cross your mind?"
"Of course it did, pretty much as soon as I found out." Tobin admits. "She made me promise not to tell you, she was terrified that if you knew then..." It was Tobin's turn to trail off, "Look, she didn't want to be a burden, which is what she always feels like. I kept an eye on her, we worked out a plan that would get her off of them in the safest way possible."
"And is she? Off them?"
"It's part of the reason she went to Houston, there's a clinic there. She's getting the help that she needs."
"Okay."
"Okay?" Tobin asks, now completely confused with where this conversation is heading.
"Okay, thank you for looking after her. Okay, thank you for being someone that she can confide in."
There was a small silence between the two, only interrupted by Allie who was late to breakfast and rushed for coffee.
"Hey lovers." Long mused, completely dismissing the general vibe of the room and smiling at her friends. "Don't be late!"
Alex and Tobin watched as Allie vacated the room, coffee in hand, before either uttered a single word.
"How did you know?" Tobin finally asked.
"I had a feeling when she left to go back to Portland. I can't explain how or why, but I knew something was wrong." Alex sighs, running a hand through her hair before tying it up. "I also know how fucking stubborn she is, so I didn't say anything - she would only deny it."
"Wait...so--"
"Yeah." Alex interrupted, a small smile playing on her face. "I asked Kristie to check on her."——
"Hey beautiful." Jack chirps, kissing Cody on the forehead before slipping into the booth opposite her. "How did your appointments go?"
The waitress takes Jack and Cody's orders, leaving the two with water. Jack basically inhales her water, still feeling the lag from training that morning.
"It was good." Cody replies, chuckling at the questioning look from her best friend. "I mean it - it was good. It felt refreshing to talk about addiction with people who understand, and don't judge me. Physio went well too, but my leg fucking hurts."
"So you're definitely trying to get back to playing?" Jack asks, Cody not missing the hopeful glint in her friend's eyes.
"I am. I miss it."
The two cease talking as the waitress gives them their orders, asking if either girl wants a refill before leaving them alone to deal with other customers.
After almost fifteen minutes of silent eating, Jack finally speaks. "So...Kristie?" She smirks as Cody avoids eye contact with her. "It's always been her, huh?"
At this Cody looks at her best friend, "We'll see. What I didn't expect was you and Rachel."
"That makes two of us." Jack laughs. "I was still set on hating her when I moved here. She was the girl that got in the way of your happiness, but..."
"But?" Cody smirked.
"But when I moved here...it was like I seen this whole other person. She was the one that made sure I was settling in well, if I wanted to hang out, get coffee, maybe grab some dinner. She would text me every single night to make sure I'm safe and to say goodnight."
"That's so cute." Cody mutters as she sip her water. "It's nice."
"What do you mean nice?"
"Well, I remember before Ellie, you wouldn't date anyone. Now you're living with Rachel, and being...adultish. It's nice." Cody laughs as she leaves money on the table to cover their meal and the tip.
"Look at you being adultish." Jack smirks, letting Cody wrap an arm around her shoulders for stability. "Do you know how you're going to surprise Kristie?"
"No idea." Cody admits, keeping her arm wrapped around her best friend as they leave the diner and step out into the warm Texas sun. "Wanna help?"
"I thought you'd never ask!"
