My thoughts have been racing ever since Tobin and Ali decided to text me. What could they both want to talk about, and without my mom knowing? I didn't waste any time after getting their messages. I said goodbye to Jordan, who said that an England teammate of hers would be stopping by anyway, and I went straight to Ali's room. I knock on the door, nerves setting in as I wait for someone to answer.
"Hey kiddo." Ashlyn greets me after opening the door, and she's not exactly the person I expected to be here.
"Hey Ash. Ali here?"
"Yeah, come on in." She ushers me inside, looking down the hallway for any signs of my mother, I'm guessing, before closing the door.
"Hey Codes." Tobin's next to greet me, patting the spot next to her on the bed, as Ash takes a seat next to Ali. There's a tense atmosphere in the air, not helping my anxiety at all.
"Okay, spit it out, please?" I ask, as nice as possible, as I begin to play with my fingers.
"Relax, Cody." Tobin puts her hands over mine, ceasing my movements, and in it's own way - comforting. "It's nothing bad. Well, at the very least...I hope you don't think it's bad, it's just-"
"Tobs, you're starting to ramble." Ash cuts the midfielder off.
"Right. I asked you to be here because I think you should know...I asked Ali to give up her rights to you-"
"WHAT?!" I yell, jumping to my feet in anger, not letting her finish. "You can't do that, Ali took care of me!"
"Cody, let her finish." Ali finally speaks, as gentle as always, and stands to wrap me in a hug. "It doesn't mean I don't care about you, or love you, but this is something you should hear." She nods at Tobin to continue as I take my seat again.
"Excluding Alex...you're the most important person to ask-"
"Ask what?"
"Cody, stop interrupting." Ali scolds, very motherlike.
"I've already spoken with your grandparents, your aunts and we all agree that it's your blessing that's most important. So..." She trails off, taking a small box out of her pocket and opening it to show me the beautiful diamond engagement ring. "I want to ask Alex to marry me, and I know that you're the only thing in this world that she loves more than anything. It wouldn't be right to ask her if I knew you weren't okay with it."
"I'm not okay with it." I tell her, taking the entire room by surprise. I can practically see Tobin taking her last breath. "I'm...overjoyed, Tobin. I think it's a fucking great idea! I'm just a little confused...what does this have to do with Ali giving up her rights?"
"Right...1, don't do that again. You almost gave me a heart attack." Tobin heaves a sigh of relief. "And 2, if it's okay with you, I'd like to take up her rights."
"Oh...that makes sense." I mutter. Part of me wants to scream 'fuck yeah', but part of me loves having Ali as my other mother. "Will you giving up your rights...change our relationship?" I ask Ali. I don't want Tobin to think I don't want her to have any rights, I just never thought about Ali giving up her rights.
"Nothing will change, Cody. I'll always be a call away." She squeezes my hand for emphasis, before a small silence falls upon the room.
"Okay then." I turn to Tobin, "I want you to be my guardian."
I barely get a chance to finish the sentence before the midfielder pulls me in for a bone-crushing hug, muttering 'thank you' over and over again. Luckily for me, my phone interrupts us.
