When I woke up the next morning the sun was just rising but I could see we were reaching an end to our desert journey at the sight of mountains approaching ahead. I sat up shoving my bear carving back in my pocket before making my way over to a tired-looking Kun. They smiled when they saw me approaching and gave me an enthusiastic, "Good morning!"
"You've been up all night and you're still somehow asenergeticas a puppy."
I start trying back my hair in its usual plats and bun as Kun responds, "It's a talent of mine." They say happily, I groan quietly to myself as I rummage through my bag looking for food. "And I see you're attitude towards mornings hasn't changed."
I throw a playful glare their way before responding, "Every morning is a chance to prove I'm not who I once was. However, the sun has barely risen. So I'm terribly sorry if I'm not so chirpy this morning." Kun chuckles shaking their head before speaking again.
"You better eat up. We are reaching the edge of the desert and we'll have to walk the rest of the way." I nod my head and do as they say.
Once I finish eating we had just about reached the end of the endless sand. I grab my stuff and throw my bag over my back, passing Kun's stuff to them so they could do the same before jumping off the glider. Kun exchanges the glider with a nearby traveller in turn for some extra money before we start to move.
"It won't be too long of a walk."
I nod, "Ok."
"Ok? Just Ok? Come on, you've been away from me for how long and you're conversation skills go to shit." They complain, "I want to hear all about your adventures! The people you met! Oh, the people are always my favourite part about traveling." I just sigh and shake my head and they do the same.
We continue walking as they try again, "What about that boy you were with? You guys seem pretty close." It was a question asked of pure curiosity, not a hidden word behind it in any sense, yet I winced as if there were. As if they said, 'I know you've moved on and I'm not happy about it.'
Again Kun sighs, that smile that was always on their face seems to have gotten tired of always being on show. I've seen it hide away in this short amount of time more than I'd expect. Now was a good example of that, before we get a chance to continue the conversation Kun looks up, "We are here." I look in front of me to find myself surrounded by refugees waiting to get to safety and workers running around with passports and luggage in hand. When did we get here?
Suddenly a familiar face shows up in front of us, "Couldn't find any more refugees or helping hands, then?" They ask, crossing their arms over their chest.
