We've been walking for a long time now. My feet hurt through each shift of weight, the sun beats down on the back of my hot neck as I stare at the dry ground, following the shadows of the group in front of me.
"This is humiliating," says Katara.
Sokka's shadow shifts closer to his sisters, "You mean, getting thoroughly spanked by the Fire Nation or having to walk all the way to the Western Air Temple?"
Katara pauses, "Both."
Aang's voice, slightly further away, comes out sheepish, "Sorry guys, but Appa gets tired carrying all these people."
No one speaks for a while but we all know no one holds anything against Aang or Appa.
"I wonder how the rest of the troops are," says Teo. I catch myself fiddling with my hair, looking away.
"They're probably on their way to a prison. Seems like my dad just got out and now he's going back in," says Haru.
The Duke sighs, "I miss Pipsqueak."
"I miss not having blisters on my feet." Somehow Sokka's stupid comment gets the edge of my lips twitching into a smirk, when I look up he's watching me, a small smile already on his lips.
Abruptly, the group is cut off by Toph stopping in her tracks, "Hey, we're here! I can feel it!"
I glance up, confused as to how even with my eyes on the ground I managed to miss the Western Air Temple but nothing is there just a cliffs edge.
"Uhhh... I think your feet need their eyes checked," says Katara.
Aang shakes his head, "No, she's right. We are here!" The boy leads us all back onto Appa's back, for the short trip down the side of the cliff, only then to the rest of us understand. Grand upside down towers sit on the underside of the overhanging cliffs edge. Several buildings seem to be carved into the rocky wall, balcony like plateaus surrounding them.
We land on one such platform, the youngest hurrying off of Appa's back to explore, "It's so different from the Northern Air Temple. I wonder if there are any secret rooms," Teo says, awe dripping in his voice.
Haru speaks as already running into the buildings to explore, "Let's go check it out!"
Teo and The Duke follow, Aang makes to do the same but is stopped by Katara, "You guys go. I think we need to talk about some things." Without further ado the boys race off.
"Why can't I go?"
"We need to decide what we're gonna do now, and since you're the Avatar, maybe you should be a part of this," Katara explains.
