"Suddenly, they heard something in the dark. Oooh... It came into the touch light... and they knew the blade of Wing Fung was haunted!" Sokka stands, drawing an imaginary sword and pointing it towards the fire, yelling dramatically."
Aang lies back staring at the dark night sky, "I think I like 'the man with the sword for a hand' better."
Toph shakes her head, "Water tribe slumber parties must stink."
"Hey, don't lump me in with them, the North knows how to tell a scary story."
Katara sits up straight, "No wait! I've got one! And this is a true Southern Water Tribe story."
Sokka sits down, "Is this one of those 'a friend of my cousin knew some guy this happened to' stories?"
"No, it happened to mum." Sokka stiffens and Aang finally sits up, I even find myself shuffling closer to the group. "One winter when mum was a girl, a snowstorm buried the whole village for weeks. A month later, mum noticed she hadn't seen her friend Nini since the storm. So mum and some others went to check on Nini's family. When they got there, no one was home. Just a fire flickering in the fireplace."
Sokka shuffles closer, reasoning it was for warmth, but I could see the panicked look in his eyes, "While the men went out to search, mum stayed in the house. When she was alone, she heard a voice, 'It's so cold and I can't get warm!' Mum tuned and saw Nini standing by the fire. She was blue like she was frozen. Mum ran outside and called for help, but when everyone came back, Nini was gone."
Sokka frowns, "Where'd she go?"
"No one knows. Nini's house stands empty to this day, but sometimes, people see smoke coming up from the chimney, little Nini is still trying to get warm."
Katara's words hang in the air for a while, no one sure what to say. That is until Toph sits up straight suddenly, placing her hands on the ground, "Wait! Guys, did you hear that? I hear people under the mountain. And they're screaming."
Sokka's face drops as he relaxes slightly, "Pfft! Nice try."
"No, I'm serious. I hear something."
Katara shakes her head, "You're probably just jumpy from the ghost stories..."
Toph doesn't seem to believe her, sighing, "It just... stopped."
Aang shuffles closer to the group and I wrap him up in what I hope is a comforting hug, "Alright, now I'm getting scared."
"-Hello children."
Aang jumps in my arms and the others screech at the sudden appearance of a new voice. I hold Aang closer to me and somewhere in the fear find my hand attached to Sokka's between us. I don't let go - not yet.
