As Jungwon had closed the door behind him, just for a short moment before the door closec completely he had heard a loud and deafening beep.
"What was that?" Soyeol's voice broke Jungwon out out of his trance as he walked over and crouched down on the floor beside Hojin, leaning his back against the wall as he just stared at the door in front of him, "dad?"
"Sorry," Jungwon shook his head before looking over at Soyeol.
In that moment Jungwon could swear his daughter had never looked any more like her mother than she did in that very moment. He had always heard about how she looked so much like him, but right now... she looked like the carbon copy of her mom.
"Come here," Jungwon sighed and reached his hand out to pull Soyeol into him as Hojin and Yejun sat on the floor beside their dad. Soyeol slowly walked over to her dad who brought her closer to him.
"What?" Soyeol questioned in confusion as Jungwon just continued to stare up at her.
"You have your mom's eyes," Jungwon softly smiled up at her-
"But I look like you," Soyeol corrected and Jungwon just nodded at her.
"But you have her eyes, be proud of those," Jungwon pointed out and bopped her nose, "they bring comfort to so many people, to have eyes like yours. They're so special."
"Then lets go see mom's eyes... you like those," Soyeol happily smiled making Jungwon slowly shake his head at her, "no? But mom said I couldn't let you miss her, when she went away for some time."
"But Soyeol... you see..." Jungwon sighed before dropping his head down, "mom might be gone for longer than just some time right now."
"What are you saying?" Soyeol cocked her head to the side, "of course she'll be back soon! Mom always promises to come back quickly whenever she goes out!"
"What I'm saying Yeol-ie... is that mom didn't feel that good," Jungwon slowly explained to the girl who just stared at him with big eyes.
Jungwon let out a small sigh at the familiar eyes before just looking down and pinching his nosebridge whilst letting out a shaky breath.
"Are you crying?" Soyeol carefully questioned as she softly patted her dad's head, "mom don't like when you're sad."
"I know," Jungwon muttered before he sucked in a deep breath before looking back up at Soyeol again, keeping in his tears for her, "the thing is, mom might not be coming back from where she is going."
"Oh..." Soyeol muttered as she looked down, "but she'll send us letters and gifts, still... right?"
"Everyday," Jungwon softly spoke as he just nodded at her, "now I'm gonna call grandma, so she can come pick you up. You three will go and celebrate Hojin and Yejun's birthday whilst I stay with mom, okay?"
"Tell mom I want her to come back home," Soyeol nodded at Jungwon who just softly smiled at her before calling his mom and explaining the situation to her.
The woman on the other line was distraught at the idea of her daughter-in-law possibly passing that very day, but she forced a bright smile on her face as she came to pick up the three kids, not forgetting to hug her son tightly.
"She has done so much, for so many people," his mom whispered, "sometimes the best people pass early, that's what makes them remembered as great people."
"I'm scared," Jungwon whispered to his mom as he just hugged her tighter, "I can't do this alone... I need her."
"I know my son... but maybe it's time for her," his mom softly spoke and caressed his cheek as she pulled away from him, "it'll be fine."
Jungwon quietly watched as his mom took the kids with him, leaving him alone in the long empty hallway. Not one nurse or the doctor had exited from Jiyeon's room, signalling to Jungwon there still might be a small hope she'll be just fine. But even if they got her back to life again, what were they then gonna do? They didn't know what was wrong with her.
"Excuse me?" a woman's voice spoke up making Jungwon look to the doorto Jiyeon's hospital room, "are you mr Yang?"
"Yes," Jungwon immediately nodded.
"And mrs. Choi is your wife?" she continued and Jungwon nodded once again, "your wife is awake and stable, we've gotten her test results over our intercom and it seems she'll need a bone marrow transplant."
"I see," Jungwon hummed and tried to look into the room in hopes of seeing Jiyeon awake.
"Do you have any knowledge of whether or not she has bone marrow transplants before?" the nurse questioned making Jungwon zoom out momentarily, trying to remember if she ever mentioned it, even in a passing.
"She has... she was born with SCID," Jungwon nodded.
"Do you know who donated back then?" the nurse questioned and Jungwon shook his head.
"She'll know... I'll go ask her," Jungwon excused and pushed past the nurse, before she even got to say anything.
In the room a dazed Jiyeon sat on her bed and looked around as the nurses and doctors in the room worked to get her hooked up to the necessary machines she'll need. It was clear that once her eyes fell on Jungwon she immediately loosened up.
"Jungwon," she muttered making Jungwon softly smile before rushing over and cupping her head in his hands, as she just stared straight into his eyes.
"Hey... little warrior," Jungwon let out a small laugh of disbelief, "how are you feeling?"
"Terrible," Jiyeon muttered making Jungwon just nod at her.
"Look, I know you're overwhelmed, but I need to know... when you got your bone marrow transplant, who was the donator?" Jungwon sternly questioned and brushed her hair out of her face.
"My brother," Jiyeon replied as if it was some rehearsed answer she always had making Jungwon nod before turning to a nurse.
"Her brother lives in Europe. I'll let him know and get him to fly over here fast as possible," Jungwon informed making the nurse just nod before Jungwon turned back and grabbed softly onto Jiyeon's hand, "they said they got your test results and that you'll need a bone marrow transplant and then... then I guess you'll be just fine."
"I thought I would die," Jiyeon muttered looking at Jungwon with big scared eyes.
"No... you said you would grow old with me and this just proves that you're keeping your promise," Jungwon smiled softly at her, "and when we go home, you're taking some rest for some time. I'll go around and clean and cook and all those things you usually do for us."
"You're busy," Jiyeon stated making Jungwon shake his head.
"It's about time I live up to the title of husband and do those things as well," Jungwon insisted, "and then I'm gonna do all of those things. I want you to be back and well again.
"Can't wait to see you in an apron," Jiyeon let out a small smile making Jungwon just let out a small laugh before pressing a kiss to her forehead.
"I'm gonna stay here until you go home... I promise," Jungwon assured.
"The ki-" Jiyeon didn't even get to finish before Jungwon cut her off.
"My mom picked them up, they'll stay with her until you're ready to go home again, got it?" Jungwon sternly questioned and Jiyeon just nodded, "I love you."
"I love you too," Jiyeon hummed and closed her eyes before leaning her head back against the wall behind her as the nurses and doctors continued to do their work until they decided that they could leave the two lovers alone to enjoy the fact that they got to spend even more years together.
Ahh you guys really thought I would break your hearts like that??? (even tho I actually did, but I made up for it!) This is of course another ending than the sad one. So you can pick whatever one you choose to believe in.
