Chapter 56: Ghost Whisperer

"What the fu—"

Theon glares at me before I could finish the sentence. Natikom ko tuloy ang aking bibig.

Ngunit hindi pa rin nawawala ang pagtataka sa mukha ko. This isn't what I expected to greet me this early in the morning, right after I open my bedroom door.

Bumaba ang aking tingin sa batang babaeng nasa tabi ni Theon. She's clinging unto his shirt, as if hiding her existence from me. Her body language tells me she's either shy, scared, or both, pero nagniningning pa rin ang mga mata niya habang nakatingin sa akin.

Nagtaas ako ng kilay. This is only the second time I've met this kid... but I hate her already.

Sinamaan ko ng tingin ang bata. She whimpers, before scooting closer to hide behind Theon. Ngumuso siya sa lapag, pero agad ring nagbalik ng tingin sa akin. A snarl forms in my lips.

Wala pa mang ginagawa ang bata ay naiinis na ako sakaniya. Gods, I really hate kids. They're always messy, annoying, and a huge pain the ass. My patience runs out faster than food rations during a draught when I have to deal with one. Ang epal nila sa buhay.

I used to live in an orphanage, which means I have no choice but to get along with children no matter how much I want to ignore them. Marunong akong magpanggap kaya hindi na ako nahirapang magmukhang mabait sakanila, pero hindi ibig sabihin no'n ay nagbago ang aking opinyon.

"This is Maeve. We found her lost in the Underworld when I saved you in the River Styx. She doesn't know any living relatives, so the Acropolis took her in." Pagpapakilala ni Theon habang nakalahad ang kamay sa bata.

I scoff before leaning on the stairs. Hindi ko pa rin alam kung bakit nambubulabog sila sa Erebus Dorm para dito. Pinapasok ba sila ng iba or did they let themselves in? "I fail to see how this is relevant to me."

He lets out an exasperated sigh. "She wants to meet you and see if you're okay." Bahagya niyang tinulak ang bata palapit sa akin. "Go ahead. Say hi."

Bumaba ang tingin ng bata sa sahig. "But I'm scared..."

My eyebrows furrow. Sa mukhang kong 'to, may matatakot pang bata? Aba, ang sarap ibalibag ng isang 'to ah.

"Don't worry, she doesn't bite."

Mas lalong kumunot ang noo ko. What the hell? Kung mag-usap sila ay para akong hayop sa isang zoo.

"No need to be shy, Maeve. Go. Hug her." Theon encourages further making me look up at him with parted lips. This Alastorian bastard had the audacity to smirk at me! I swear, pinagtitripan nalang niya ako eh.

Tinulak niya muli si Maeve kaya naglakad na palapit ang bata sa'kin. Tumigil siya sa harapan ko at ngumiti. "H-hello po... Ate Kasdeya."

Tumingin ulit ako kay Theon. Nilagay niya sa bulsa yung kamay na nakahawak kanina kay Maeve. "She said she wants to hang out with you."

"Huh?" Sinulyapan ko si Maeve na may pagtataka sa aking mukha. She's looking at me with hopeful eyes. It creeps me out a little. Her eyes look like a mirror of screaming ghosts and yet it feels innocent.

Binalik ko ulit ang tingin ko kay Theon. "She doesn't even know me. Anong gagawin ko sa batang 'to?"

Nagkibit balikat siya. He tilts his head to the side as if challenging me. "Maeve will be with you today since we don't have training. That's okay for you, right?"

"What?" Sigaw ko. "Are you asking me to babysit her?"

Tumango lang siya. My jaw drops in disbelief and at his nonchalance. "Bakit hindi nalang ikaw?" I don't have anything else to do besides sketching new artworks in my room. Wala kaming training ni Aether ngayon as per Ma'am Franchesca's orders.
