I too, once had someone I really, truly loved

But a lot of the times, true love is just a fantasy that will never come true.

And even me, the king of the spirits, was not always one

Those days, what I would give to go back to them

The village I grew up in wasn't very financially stable, in fact, most people died at a young age, but there were the ones who survived, I was a perfect example.

My parents however, weren't as fortunate after I was born. They eventually passed away after getting sick because we weren't financially stable enough for them to support the three of us, but they wanted me to live.

Despite all this however, I was happy.

Everyone in the village was one big family, we all cared deeply for each other, always looked out for one another, and no one left anyone alone.

Because of the low food and finances, we didn't have many children my age in the village, but there were a select few. They mainly ranged, when I was about probably 5, from 6-10 year olds.

Among them, was her

The one women I really, truly loved more than anything

The one women I'd do anything to see again

Her name was Rin

And she was my first friend

The two of us had met when we were 5, one of the adults finding her deep in the woods with no recollection of how she got there or why, nor where her parents were. Our gaze locked on each other, as if fate had brought us together, from there, we did everything together. The adults always found it obscure how close we were, but the two of us never paid any mind to it.

Because we both loved each other.

We spent almost every minute of every day together, joint at the hip and almost never left each other's side. We never wanted to. She made me happy, and I made her happy.

"Kaito!" She leapt into my arms a sunny spring day, but quickly got off to show me something. "Look what I can do!" She opens her hands out, wind beginning to form in her palms as she lets out light giggles, making my heart race.

"Amazing!" I exclaimed as we both cheered. I had discovered I had water magic a few weeks ago, and was proud that she discovered her own magic too.  "Let's go in the forest and train so that we can help support the village"

We trained day and night together trying to improve our magic power, some nights we slacked off more than others, but nevertheless we were having the time of our lives. Our laughter and smiles seemed to spread throughout the village, and she was like a light that cast out the darkness. She was almost never seen without a smile on her face, and that gave everyone hope that one day everything would be ok. There would be no more deaths in the village and no one would ever struggle again.

That's why the two of us decided that we wanted to become magic knights.

"Kaito?" She whispered one night as we laid completely exhausted after training, the moonlight illuminating her features.

"What's wrong Rin?"

"I don't want anyone here to suffer anymore..." She grabbed my hand, interlacing her fingers with mine, a sad expression on her face. " You said your parents died because they couldn't provide for you and themselves, and that still happens now. I don't...I don't want that to happen anymore."

I stayed quiet for a moment as she nuzzled into my side. "Then we should become knights that protect the queen and people of the kingdom. That way we can earn money for the village"

She smiled, nodding her head and letting out a small laugh. "Yeah...we should do that"

About a year later we left the village for the first time to receive our grimoires. Both of us were extremely nervous, never have encountering anyone aside from those in the village. We walked hand in hand into grimoire tower, taking in a deep breath was we watched the grimoires fly out of the shelves. Mine landed out in front of me, a regular heart in the middle, but the cover was a light blue. A smile graces my lips as I look to Rin, a bright smile on hers as she looks back at me. Hers was green with a gold heart in the middle.  When we headed back to the village, everyone there congratulated the two of us and from there started preparing us for the royal knights exam. The two of us trained our very hardest, often going out early in the morning and coming back late at night just because we trained so hard every day. We never complained though. We knew that we had to do this if we wanted to achieve our dream of become magic knights and being able to provide for the village.

there was one night, however, I remember we were so exhausted that we ended up passing out half way through training and when we woke up, it was already night.

"Hey Kaito"

"Hm?"

"Thank you"

"Huh?"

"Thank you for staying with me" She smiles. "You didn't have to do this with me. And I make us train so much, I mean look at us we literally passed out from all the training we're doing and now its just about midnight"

I gaze at the moon which shines down on us from above, letting out a small laugh. "Rin, we're best friends. Of course I'm going to do this with you. We're in this together aren't we?"

"Of course. We'll be the best magic knights this kingdom has ever seen. Hey Kaito let's make a promise."

"Huh? A promise?"

"yeah! You said we're in this together so let's make a promise that we're always going to be together no matter what! Just the two of us!"

A blush spread across my face, but I nodded. She held out her pinky, letting out a small laugh. We interlock pinky's, making her start chanting the promise tune. "I pinky swear that we'll be together no matter what happens in the future. If I break my promise I have to swallow a thousand needles, pinky sworn!"

We both laughed, laying back on the floor together, closing our eyes. Nights like this, where it was just the two of us, almost no sound to be heard but our own laughter, reminded me that we had each other no matter what. That neither of us would ever be alone, so we wouldn't have to worry about anything that the world would ever throw at us. She fell asleep shortly after, making me smile softly as I held up my pinky.

Pinky swear we'll always be together

Rin....I wish our promise was kept.
