"Alright we're off!" Rin and I waved to the village as we began our journey to the castle for the magic knights exam.
We walked together through the forest, cracking jokes, laughing and smiling imagining what is going to happen, what our lives will be like once we become magic knights for the queen. It had been a month since that day, the day we made our promise, and nothing had really changed, with the exception of our magic getting stronger and actually learning some spells to help us.
"It'll take us a few days to get to the castle" Rin looks at the map she got from the village leader. "Just as long as we get there in 6 days we should be fine."
"We'll get there in time, it's pretty far but I don't think it'll take 6 days"
"Let's get going though! I want to see everything the kingdom has to offer!" She began to run ahead, making me laugh and chase after her.
Eventually, we made it to the city, completely in awe about how it looked up close. Sure, it had been described to us as kids but something about experiencing it ourselves made it that much better. Like we had hopped, we got to the city a day early, so we had time to rest and check out the shops and stuff around. Everyone was very nice, very welcoming, even the nobles. There was one however, that hated the two of us.
He was entitled, people even tried to put him in his place but he didn't listen. His father apparently worked closely with the queen at the time, so we didn't dare do anything to upset him. That was until, during the exam we were chosen to fight against each other. Rin and I sighed, not wanting anything to happen, but knowing him, something was bound to go wrong.
I easily swept the floor with him, those months of training from a young age paying off, and showing the others just what I could do felt good. Rin cheered me on, and when I beat him, she wore a big bright smile. He however, wasn't going to have it.
"Lowly commoner! I'll show you what happens when you mess with a noble!" He began to charge his magic, sprinting toward me, only to be stopped by two guards.
"The match is over, be careful of your moves or you'll never be a magic knight."
"Kaito!" Rin ran up to me. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, he didn't get me. The fight was easy anyways" She sighs and smiles, and as soon as the exams were wrapped up, we walked back to the place we had stayed.
The next morning the results had been posted, both Rin and myself placed in the highest squad closest to the queen. We cheered and celebrated, beginning to get to work right away. We continued to send letters to the village, constantly keeping them updated on the situations. Rin and I continued to grow together, and we'd constantly duel each other to see who'd come on top, even betting on who'd pay for the food next time we went out. We were mostly tied, so we ended up both paying for our own meals, yet it was amusing to do so.
We were having the time of our lives. Nothing could make us ever feel down, as long as we had each other, but that was until one specific mission. It was about a year into us becoming magic knights, and our power levels had grown a lot, so we were able to go on a mission ourselves
The two of us had been assigned to take care of some bandits in the forest, nothing we hadn't dealt with before, but this time it was different.
There was an unexpected person there, the leader I presumed, but I was wrong.
He was a captain from the spade kingdom, trying to attack the Heart Kingdom. The two of us had fought him off for a while, his normal magic power was nothing compared to us. With my water and Rin's wind, he wouldn't be able to touch us.
But then, just then, the presence of someone else's mana came, making me shudder from how immense it was.
The fight was completely one sided. I had grave injuries, Rin was half dead, trying her best to stay alive and fight.
"Rin please stop...you'll kill yourself" I pleaded with her, but she didn't listen
"We have to save them Kaito"
In the end, she couldn't fight anymore. She was taken down, as for myself, who was bound to die anyways, he left me there
"K-Kaito..." she whispered
"Rin don't talk....we're gonna get you out of this"
"Kaito...I love you so much. I'm sorry"
"Rin" I shook her body, but it was already too late. "Rin! Rin!"
My heart dropped, my body ran cold at the sight in front of me. My hands began to shake, tears forming in my eyes and streaming down my cheeks
"Please Please! God if you're out there please!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, voice hoarse and my face streaming with tears "Give me another chance please!"
Sound cut off, Rin disappeared, and I was alone in room with just white. My body was still the same however. Completely soaked from the water, blood on parts of my body and clothes, yet the environment was different.
"You called upon me" A voice coming from the light spoke
"Are you...."
"Kaito...." It spoke. "You wish for another chance"
"Yes! I want another chance to defeat him! I will do it!"
"Very well, I will give it to you. However, there is a condition"I gulped, and nodded. "Once you defeat your enemy, in exchange for the power to defeat him, you will be under my rule and do as I command. You will be under a contract with me. Do you understand?"
"yes! please give me the power to take him down!"
"very well then" A yellow orb found its way toward my body, it disappearing inside me, making power rush through my veins. Everything returns the way it was, Rin still lying on the floor where she was. I stood up from my place, making eye contact with the man, his grin sending shivers up my spine, but I didn't back down. Magic surrounded me, the natural mana being drawn to my body as fire, water, earth, air, dark, light, and lightning circled me, making his eyes widen. His devil magic came out, but his body was shaking.
"H-How!"
I didn't dare say anything, simply attacked with everything I had, determined to defeat him.
He did it....it was him....he took her smile, her happiness, her life
"DAMN YOU"
The battle was concluded not long after, I stood tall over his body, which laid dead, yet I felt no remorse. I only held hate for him, even though he was dead. I turned, seeing Rin laying still, everything finally hitting me again like a truck. I made my way over to her, carefully cradling her in my arms, her skin feeling cold, her face pale and her body unmoving. I felt tears return to my eyes as I whispered apologies to her, my body shaking from the cold, and the situation.
"Rin I'm so sorry. It's my fault you couldn't keep our promise. I wish you were here....I love you so much"
The rained poured heavy as I sobbed into Rin's limp body. My entire body ached, the only person I needed in my life had been taken from me, I felt I had lost my reason to live. I stopped however, realizing the deal I made.
"It's time to hold up your end of the deal"
"I understand" I kiss Rin's hand, turning to the light orb. My grimoire, which is now changed to golden with a golden heart, flew out of its place, opening to a blank page, which began to fill my itself.
"You will be the spirit that lives inside this grimoire. You will aid the future holders when they reach their power level. That is to be your new role. You will keep the name Kaito, spirit king."
I close my eyes as I'm pulled into the grimoire, into a deep sleep.
Rin....I hope your smile is shining brightly from the heavens. May we meet again in another life. Please brighten up my cloudy days again someday.
