Chapter 13 - True Power

~3 days later~

I've always hated the color red.

It reminds me of the horrific scene of that night. The blood stained floors and walls, the faces of my family members completely in shock and fear.

Oh yeah...they're not my real family. Despite knowing that, I still can't shake the anger and guilt I have. There are some nights I wake up in a cold sweat because of the memories flooding my head. Other times when I see blood I get nauseous and get anxious. What if it happens again? What will I do then? That's why I have to hide who I am. They were targeted because of my power. They died because of my gift. I can't do that to anyone ever again.

I let out a yawn, laying my head gently on the table in the mess hall. Yuno sits in front of me, quietly eating his breakfast, Klaus on his right and Mimosa on my left. She looks at me, a sad smile starting to form on her face.

"You look exhausted Y/n, are you sleeping okay?"

'Of course I'm not, look at me' I'm obviously not going to say that for multiple reasons, although I want to

"Yeah...I don't know why I'm so sleepy all the time."

"Maybe you're overworking yourself with training?" Mimosa suggests, but I shake my head

"I doubt it..."

"Maybe you should ask the Captain to give you a break this mission. I'm sure the three of us can handle it while you rest" Klaus speaks, also continuing to eat his food

"No..It's fine I'm okay" I sit up, slapping both cheeks to help me wake up. "What's the mission today?"

"Well-" Klaus begins when Captain William bursts into the room, a look of determination on his face

"The Capital is under attack again by the Diamond soldiers. Everyone we need to go now" I exchange glances with Yuno and stand up from my seat, rushing to my room to get my broom. I gulp as a wave of panic starts to fill my head. Was this what that guy from my dreams was talking about? No...it can't be. No one can control the Diamond Kingdom...I can't think about this now, the capital needs us. I look towards Yuno to see him wearing the same emotionless face as he usually does, Belle sitting in his shoulder and talking to him. Klaus in front of us, and Mimosa on my right. Everyone wears an angry, focused face, which sends shivers up my spine. Klaus looks back at us, then starts speaking.

"We're going to have to split up. There's too many to form teams. We're Golden Dawn, we should be able to care for ourselves." We nod. "Just be careful"

I fly close to Yuno and give him on final glance. "Be safe Yuno"

"You too"

Each one of us splits up to different parts of town, quickly examine the terrain. Bright flames erupt from the other side of town and echoes of the screams of citizens are all that is heard. My heart drops and I begin to run to a collapsed building not too far away, hoping that there are not injured citizens.

Boy was I wrong

It seems as though I've forgotten how to breath. My eyes met the crimson blood painting the ground and remains of the building and several limbs hang loosely from different areas. I hear a small child, no older than 4 start wailing as her eyes focus on the scene in front of her. I pick her up gently and start flying away.

"Y-You have to save my momma" she hiccups between cries

"I'm sorry...but there's nothing I can do. She's gone..."

The child's cries get louder and louder in my arms and my heart breaks even more. No one should have to lose their family at such a young, let alone see the corpse. I hand her off to one of the knights on standby and rush back to rescue more citizens.
