DAMRU

When the damaru is shaken by holding it in the middle, then this piece strikes the skin of one mouth first and then reverses on the other face, giving the sound of 'dug-dug'.  That is why it is also called Dugadugi.

When Saraswati was born in the world, her voice created sound, but voice was devoid of rhythm and music.  Lord Shiv played and danced along the Damru 14 times to create music in the voice.  This gave birth to the  grammar and rhythm of music.  In this way the Damru of Lord Shiv was born.
