Many holy places of Hindus like Haridwar, Allahabad and Varanasi are situated on the banks of river Ganga.

There are many beliefs among Hindus about the origin of Ganga.
According to vamna purana, when Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana raised one of his feet towards the sky, then Brahma ji washed the feet of Lord Vishnu and filled the water in his kamandal.  With the effulgence of this water, Ganga was born in the kamandal of Brahma ji.  Brahma ji handed over the Ganges to the Himalayas, thus Goddess Parvati and Ganga are both sisters.
