Pilgrims travel long distances to immerse the ashes of their relatives in the waters of the Ganges so that their loved ones can go straight to heaven.

According to vamna purana, when Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana raised one of his feet towards the sky, then Brahma ji washed the feet of Lord Vishnu and filled the water in his kamandal. With the effulgence of this water, Ganga was born in the kamandal of Brahma ji. Brahma ji handed over the Ganges to the Himalayas, thus Goddess Parvati and Ganga are both sisters.
