They sit eating their food, enjoying each other's company, with only a few dirty looks from Sam about their food. Every few minutes Mae goes over to check on her experiments and gather the results.

Sam gets up to throw out his salad container and pauses to glance at the test tubes. "Anything yet?"

"Not really." She answers. "No sign of sulfur so far and I'm not even sure if shifters leave behind any trace on their victims. As far as I know, the only evidence they leave is a gloopy pile of slothed off skin and that is left wherever they are when they change, so it's unlikely to be on the bodies."

"Hopefully, Sam and I will have some luck when we search the video feeds." Dean reassures her, as he takes another bite of his burger.

Glancing up from her experiments, she smiles at the smear of ketchup on his mouth. "You got a little something right there." She says pointing to her lip.

"Thanks." He replies, while wiping at it but misses completely.

Mae just laughs and Sam joins in once he sees Dean's face. "What?" Dean questions, looking baffled, which makes them laugh all the more.

As Sam and Dean check the video footage, Mae finishes her experiments, both activities turn out inconclusive results. The trio hit the books and scrolls hoping to find something that they missed. Sam starts pulling up information on his laptop, while Dean goes to the mini fridge to get drinks.

On the way back to the table he pauses to watch Mae take her hair down from its messy updo, he longs to run his fingers through her long, dark tresses, as they cascade down her shoulders to her back. As he nears the table once more, he is about to reach out to do so when Sam asks where the drinks are from behind his computer screen.

Smirking, Dean sits down and places a beer by his brother's arm. "A little impatient there, eh Sammy?"

"Yeah, when it takes you over five minutes just to cross the room and back, it's warranted."

"It wasn't that long."

Sam just scoffs at Dean, who turns to Mae. "C'mon back me up here, Mae, it wasn't five minutes."

She checks her watch. "Actually it was more like six." Looking up she tries to give him an apologetic smile but sees Dean's pout and ends up laughing instead.

"Well next time you can all get your own drinks." Dean grumbles as he opens the closest book to him.

Sam joins in the laughter and soon Dean does too. They calm down and return to the case files and books. About an hour later, they end up chatting and time passes quickly, before any of them even realize it's already half past one in the morning.

Checking her watch again, she blows out a large puff of air. "It's getting late, I should go get some sleep."

"Sounds like a plan, we need some shut eye too." Sam says, as he starts collecting all the stuff from the table. "Night, Mae."

"Goodnight, Sam."

As she rises from the table, so does Dean. "I'll walk you over."

"You don't..."
"Whatever we are hunting is abducting people, so yeah, I do." He cuts off her protest.

"True."

He picks up his coat and puts it on her shoulders once more. "Wear this, it's even colder out there now."

"Ok." Blushing, she pulls the jacket tight around her. "But what about you?"

"I'll be fine, it's not too far." He opens the door and guides her out by placing his hand on her lower back.

Smiling at the feel of his touch, she follows his lead. "Alright, my big bad protector." She says, as she chuckles soft and low.

They walk the short distance between the two doors, taking as much time to get there as they can, neither wanting to part ways just yet. Standing by her door, they stare at each other and begin to feel the familiar pull, like magnets that desperately want to close the gap. Suddenly she turns her gaze to the floor and gathers her wits about her, while he is left feeling a little spacey and incomplete.

Fumbling for her key in her pocket, she mumbles. "I really should get some sleep for tomorrow."

"Yeah, have a good night's rest." He hesitates a little but recovers quickly, before she looks back up at him.

"Goodnight, Dean."

Peering down at her once more, he wants to reach forward and brush the hair out of her face but he refrains. "Goodnight, Mae."

He watches as she opens her door and enters in before making his way back to his and Sam's room. He pauses for a moment when he thinks he hears the scrape of a footstep behind him but when he spins around he finds no one there. Searching the area for a few seconds, he brushes it off and continues on his way.

Once in her room with the door closed, she breathes out a sigh and thinks. How am I supposed to work with that man, when all I wanna do is kiss him. Pushing that thought aside, she begins to get ready for bed. Laying under the covers, she tries to fall asleep but it seems to elude her, due to the excitement of the case and Dean.
