Four responded to her voice but the look in his eyes was blank. He attacked her without a second thought. I watched them struggle, The others in the room coming over to see what was causing the commotion. I shot their legs one at a time, crippling them so they wouldn't interfere. Four pinned Tris under him, her gun was pointed at him as she begged him to see her.
"Toby." I called, and Four's attention was taken off Tris as she struggled against him. Tris flipped the gun pointing it at her own head once again begging him to see her. Four however was stuck on me. I dropped my gun on the floor and tackled him off of her.
"Turn off the simulation." I shouted to Tris as I wrestled with Four trying to keep him from stopping her. Four had managed to flip me on my back with his hands wrapped around my throat. I could feel my lungs begin to burn as I fought him.
"Four, it's me, Toby it's me. It's okay. I forgive you. I still love you." I managed to get out before suddenly my throat was free.
"I need help shutting this down." Tris cried out from somewhere behind me.
"I got it, I'll shut it down." Four's voice joined her desperate cries. I allowed myself to lay on the floor while the two worked to shut everything down. I had no idea how much time passed as I laid there. I heard shuffling next to my head.
"Okay miss dramatic, it's time to get up." Four called down to me. I opened my eyes, meeting his eyes that finally looked alive again. He offered me a hand and I grabbed it. He yanked me to my feet, almost sending me flying as the adrenaline had left my body. We exited the room, Four came face to face with his father, I could see him grimace but he kept moving picking up guns and ammo the same way Tris and I had when we left Abnegation. We followed suit, something that had become second nature in only a day. I hated feeling exposed or weak when it came to having to face down with the rest of our faction.
"Take me with you." Peter blurted out as we began creeping our way back out of the compound. Eric and Max were likely to have figured out the transmitters had stopped working and had a good idea who it would have been. We all turned to look at Peter, the others with a little more shock than me. I knew Peter was always out to ally himself with the strongest party and at the moment that was us.
"If they find out he helped us they might kill him." I reasoned to Four.
"Let them." Tris huffed out. I shot her a look, reminding her that I still owed Peter my life. "Fine but don't slow us down or cause us any issues." She agreed and started moving again. We heard footsteps of guards coming towards us as we moved through the compound to avoid them. We reached the doors that lead us outside and back towards the train, as we filed out of the building those who had been under the serum were confused and curious. We heard the train starting to pull out and we all took off running. Peter led the pack even with a bullet hole in his leg, I was not far behind him. Four jumped on first to open the doors of the last car, Peter at the first door of the train car. I ran to catch up to Peter letting Caleb jump on first. I hauled myself up into the car noticing Tris, Marcus, and Four were not in it yet. I watched as Four threw his gun into the car and hauled Marcus into the car. I barely heard Tris tell Four she had it before I watched him wrap an arm around her waist and hold her for a moment before letting her get into the train car.
I had stopped my approach and sat down with my back pressed against the side of the car by the open door. Caleb slid down next to me as I watched Four and Tris embrace.
"It looks like they have something going on there." He whispered to me. I rested my head on his shoulder not caring at that moment that I barely knew him.
"It's hard to give up on someone when they were all you wanted for so long." I whispered out in response as I watched Four rest his lips against her forehead out of the corner of my eye. I felt the tears spring up in my eyes and decided that it was better to shut them than watch anymore. The train flew through the city as I felt the betrayal set in, earlier that day Four had said he wanted a life with me. It felt like months ago. He had acted just like that with me. I finally let the tears slip down my cheeks and to my surprise Caleb gently placed an arm around my waist. We rode the train until the end of the line jumping when we reached Amity. Four was going to talk with the leader Johanna to bargain for our ability to stay with them for a little while. I had other ideas. I took a handgun with me, tucked in my pants hidden under my jacket as I approached the wall.
"Why are you here?" came a gruff voice as I got closer. I noticed a man well hidden in the trees.
"I need to see my brother." I called up to the man. I shuffled forward, relying on the last of my adrenaline to get me to Wayne. Wayne met me at the bottom of the wall having been told I was looking for him. He took one look at me and sensed something was wrong. Before I could open my mouth I was following behind him far from the others.
"What happened. You look like you've been in a war."
"I was." I revealed as I looked up at him. "I couldn't find mom and dad. I don't know what happened to them. Erudite injected us with a serum that had a transmitter in it, we were forced to massacure Abnegation. I tried to save as many as I could but I couldn't find them." I had started sobbing at some point as everything finally sank in. Wayne pulled me into his chest as I explained everything else to him.
"Do they know you helped?" he asked when I had finally calmed down enough.
"I don't know, I think Jeanine and Eric suspect but they never saw me out of the simulation." Wayne pet my hair away from my face as he hummed in thought.
"You can't go back. You should stay here. Stay with your friends and survive. If you get captured, say you were being forced to go along with them." Wayne kissed the top of my head. "I'll side with the Dauntless members who believe you are innocent. I will protect you as best as I can. I love you. Now get out of here." Wayne shoved me away from him and towards Amity, I looked back once to see him wiping tears from his face.
