Chapter 57:

As the hospital's doors closed behind him, Athiss let out a sudden breath, despite not realizing he had been holding it. The tears that he could feel were just moments away from forming were quickly wiped away with his blinking. The situation involving him and Vaughn was complicated not just because of his feelings, but also because of everything that encompassed them. Sometimes he wondered if what they had was merely a fluke, if the only reason that Vaughn was trying now was because of the divorce papers that he was served. The situation at hand was not one that he regretted himself. After all, they have been estranged for longer than they have been together. It was just their lives that took two different paths.

With a quick shake of his head, Athiss scanned the area and smiled a little as his eyes fell on his father and Caspian. Seeing the way they looked at each other made him understand what true love was. When people looked at him and Vaughn married, they thought that the situation of their fathers should be a slap in the face for him. But it wasn't, not when he discovered it, and not now. It was obvious they depended on one another. He wondered if this was what his father was hiding, if this was what made his mother the way she was. However, shaking his head, he was sure that was not the case. While rubbing the back of his head, he forced his eyes away from them as he walked away towards the coffee area. As tired as he was and in need of a pick-me-up, they must need one as well, if not worse.

After arriving, he purchased two coffees for each of them and made sure they were made to their liking before walking over to them. When he stopped inches from them, he said, "Father Caspian, I brought you both coffee." He watched as they both smiled at him before he handed them one cup each. As he did, he looked over at the bundle in between them, smiling gently at the little girl who was curled up like she needed to sleep. It was highly likely that she did, since she seemed to feed off everyone's emotions.

He knelt down slowly as he heard "Thanks Son", "Thanks Athiss". His eyes darted to the little girl before he gently lifted her off their laps and held her against his chest. He whispered: "It's time for a reunion between mother and daughter.". Besides, I think you too should take some time to rest if you can. I believe it will help a lot." Slowly rising, he nodded as he walked away.

The young man walked quickly back to the room area and noticed the doors had already been opened for him as he smiled at his cousin, mouthing "thanks" and quickly crossing the threshold. As he did so, he didn't look back at his cousin again as he led his way down the hall towards the room where his best friend was waiting for her child, even if she did not want to see her child, he knew how stubborn she could be when it came to refusing what she wanted.

Having maneuvered through the halls, he stopped at the closed door. Honestly, he was wondering if he was a bit overstepping by bringing her daughter here when she didn't even ask for her. Taking a deep breath, he knocked on the door softly, waiting for a reply and where there was none. He sighed as he slowly opened the door and stepped inside.

When he took in the situation, he stopped singing and gently pulled the child closer to him. After a moment of reflecting as he looked at the bundle in his arms, he walked closer to the bed before laying her daughter against Cheryl's body, resting her arms on top of the child. A few seconds later, he leaned over and gently kissed the child, then Cheryl, on the head before he sat in the chair next to her bed with a small smile on his face.
