Cheryl smiled as she watched her daughter run around with no care in the world. She knew that these precious moments were one of the things that she would miss the most when the cancer finally took her and she was no longer here. As she brought her bottom lip into her mouth, she couldn't help it as a cough racked her body making her let her lip go free. She quickly covered her mouth as more coughs made her body feel as if it was convulsing.
After a few minutes of coughing, she glared at her palm as she brought it away from her lips looking at the red stains that marred her palm.
Rapidly wiping her palm on her black pants, she closed her eyes wondering when she would have the guts to seek Athiss out. She hated that she loved him like she did, especially when her wife was getting the short end of the stick. However, she couldn't help it. She had loved Athiss from the moment that she met him, yet she would always be stuck in the friendzone - the sister zone, she knew that now. Plus, she hated the way that her brother was always nervous around her when it came to the way that she dealt with Athiss and their relationship. She would be the first to admit that the way that she handled it was more of a meddler than someone who wanted the best for them.
Even though she did want the best for them - for her brother and her best friend - she couldn't help but wonder if it was her and him together, could she have made him happy. She knew that this way of thinking is what pushed Athiss away in the first place. He had made it more than clear that he held no romantic feelings towards her, and the only thing that he felt was platonic, more of a sisterly love than anything.
However, she hated that. She knew that she would eventually have to accept it as fact and move on. Whether that was before she left this world was yet to be seen.
When agitation started to get the better of her, Cheryl shook her head as she spoke softly, "Munchkin, come here." As she continued to whisper that fond nickname to her daughter, she couldn't help but smile fondly at her. She looked so much like Athiss that it made her heartache. Clearing her throat, she once again spoke, "Lovebug, come here." Smiling broader she couldn't help the love that she felt towards her daughter in her heart as her daughter dropped the toy that she was playing with to run over to her and plop her small body down onto the couch next to her. As she wrapped her arms around her miracle child, as she calls her, she closed her eyes while whispering, "I love you."
She was just so tired that she almost missed it when her daughter spoke, "I love you too, Mommy".
Opening her eyes as she smiled down at her daughter, she pulled her munchkin closer as she reached for the remote to restart the movie that was playing moments ago. Just as they both got engrossed in the film, she caught a glimpse out of the corner of her eye. Unhurriedly, she maneuvered her head to the entrance of the den. She sighed as she took in the tall woman leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and her face set in a fine line. She knew that if she didn't act promptly all hell would break loose. So, smiling as sweetly as she could towards her wife she went to speak when her wife's harsh words came tumbling out towards her, "Why must you spend all of your time with her and not me?"
