Chapter Fifty:
Stretching his arms high above his head, his eyes remained closed. Athiss sighed as he heard his shoulders pop. Almost instantly his eyes shot open as he surveyed his surroundings. As he did he noticed that his best friend, her wife, and her daughter were in his bed cuddled next to him.
Slowly lowering his arms from above his head, he eyed them wearily, the last thing that he wanted to do was to wake them all up. After all it was still the middle of the night. Besides Cheryl looked like she was on death's door. Why she thought it was a good idea to travel was beyond him.
Rapidly biting down on his lip, he wondered what it would be like when she was no longer here. When her light diminished, would he be able to continue to live the way that he had up until now? She was his light in the darkness, the person he went to went things seemed cloudy or grey, the person that seemed to understand him even when he had nothing to say at all. He hated the fact that he and the world were going to lose her and there was nothing that they could do to stop it. Sometimes, he wished that he could love her the way that she wanted and needed from him that way that she would have a reason to fight, but if she wasn't fighting because of her daughter and wife he knew that him being with her would make no difference.
Quickly shaking his head, Athiss wanted nothing more than to take her place. She was needed in the world, she had so much to offer, he on the other hand didn't deserve this life. Sometimes he wished that those boys would have killed him, then the pain that he's felt these last few years wouldn't have been able to hurt him.
But he knew that wasn't the truth. He wanted to live, he had things to offer the world as well. He knew that soon he and Cheryl would need to talk about that night, the night she was almost raped, and he was almost killed.
It was the one topic they never really spoke about. But he needed to know what she went through, while he was knocked out. He knew that she always said that she was safe because of him, that he was her hero, but he never understood why. They knew what he did that night, and he knew the gist of what happened, but he knew she was keeping something from him. What it was, was anyone's guess. And that was something that frightened him.
Slowly swinging his legs to the side of the bed, he went to stand up when he felt a hand land on his arm. Quickly turning around his eyes met with Cheryl's as she spoke: "Don't Leave Athiss. Please, don't leave."
Smiling down at her he whispered: "Don't worry Cheryl, I'll be back. I won't be gone long. I just need to clear my head. I promise I'll be back Cheryl." He watched as she let his arm go before her eyes slowly closed again.
As he stayed there staring at her he couldn't help it when he felt the tears streaming down his cheeks. He wasn't sure how he was supposed to act. His best friend was dying, and there was nothing that he could do. All his knowledge and training meant nothing when it mattered the most.
He was debating whether becoming a doctor was the right thing to do especially since he couldn't even save someone as important to him as she was. Sometimes he wondered what their lives would have been like if he hadn't been gay. He knew that Cheryl calls herself Lesbian, but she wasn't really. She liked men, but he knew that the reason why she didn't was because of him.
