Chapter Twenty-four: Athiss
Athiss looked down at the phone that he now cradled carefully within his grasps. He hated the fact that Vaughn had made his once steady heart become a rolling rollercoaster of turmoil with one sentence: "I want to see you." It took all Athiss' willpower not to respond back with: "I want to see you too, and I'm in town." He knew that there was a possibility that he could run into the man that he wanted to see, that he needed to see but he wanted it to be on his own terms. And not because Vaughn had asked for it. He was so tired of always being on Vaughn's time.
Besides he came here for a medical conference, nothing more nothing less.
Quickly standing up from his spot on the bed Athiss eyed the dark and boring hotel room. He wished that he could be anywhere but here, he hated sleeping in places that he was unfamiliar with. But there was no way that he was going to crash at his parents' house. Not when that would mean that he would have to see his mother, his father however he wanted to see. He needed to see was more accurate. He needed to get answers about some things. And his father was one of those people that he knew when he asked, the man wouldn't lie to him. His father had always been the one rock that he knew wouldn't judge him for his feelings and his insecurities.
Honestly, right now he felt as if maybe it was time to allow him father to know what really happened all those years. He knew his old man had questions. But he always believed in allowing people the time to come to him with what was needed to be said in time. His father never pushed, he always loved.
That was one of the many things that made Athiss love his father with so much love that sometimes Athiss wondered if this how others felt towards their parents. If he was being honest he never felt this connection with his mother. Sometimes he felt like she wasn't really his mother. The way she looked at him with contempt, the way she only saw what she wanted to.
A real mother wouldn't treat him like he was scum just because he was gay. Athiss wasn't going to hide in the background just because she was uncomfortable with whom he was, and what he had become. He was going to embrace all that he is and all that he would become. If he could do it in a room of medical doctors his mother was nothing. He knew that there would come a time where he would have to tell his father everything that has happened between him and her. But he didn't want to hurt his father, his loving and understanding dad.
He loved his father, and never wanted to see him hurt. Even if that meant that he would be the one that would have to hurt. Taking one last look around the room Athiss walked across the room to the chair where his briefcase, wallet and the keycard for the room were.
As he reached forward for the briefcase he could feel the phone that was still securely tucked away in his palms vibrate. But he was sick of hanging onto every word of Vaughn. He needed to put some distance between them for at least a little bit. Besides talking and responding to Vaughn had made him late.
