Hey... how ya'll doin...
I've been gone for about two years and have decided to return and finish the fic! However, I've just skimmed it because reading it makes me want to set myself on fire, so... I apologise if this is even jankier than it will be due to the long hiatus, haha <3 I also can't remember where I was initially taking this fic to the end, but I'll try my best :D
ALSO! I took out the part where Wei Ying was poisoned in the last chapter because I felt it was unnecessary </3 sorry to the angst lovers out there

Why would somebody murder Jin Guangshan?
Wei Ying could think of many reasons he would murder Jin Guangshan, but as he didn't, he could cross himself off the list. Madam Jin might've done it. A woman can only face so much infidelity before she snaps. Maybe she walked in on her husband on one of his many conquests and decided she had enough. Maybe it was someone from one of the many clans he kept firmly beneath his boot, or perhaps, a random assassination.
Wei Ying knew better than that, though. As he pushes food around his plate, his eyes lock on one person. Yes. He thinks. If anybody had reason to want Jin Guangshan dead, it was Jin Guangyao.
The man rushes around the room, flusteredly tending to guests, yet his serene smile never wavers. He retains a perfect mask of humility, but Wei Ying is no longer convinced. Fool me once. He thinks.
In his past life, the before, he'd related to Jin Guangyao. Sure, he'd been at the centre of the household, but he'd never been welcome. Jin Guangyao hadn't been welcome either. He was kicked down the stairs of Carp Tower and only awarded his position after killing Wen Ruohan, yet he'd never escaped the servant status. His job was all too similar to serving under Nie Mingjue, but it had been ten times more degrading.
Wei Ying takes a guess at who was behind the second flute, and his teeth grind. If he's right, Jin Zixuan is in danger.
He doesn't fret. Jin Guangyao is a very smart man. He won't kill Jin Zixuan so soon after Jin Guangshan, and not without being able to pin it on Wei Ying. Similar to his past life, Wei Ying is scrutinized by the sects. He used demonic cultivation again, and inevitably, it stained his character. Who would trust a demonic cultivator?
Lan Zhan offloads more food onto his plate, and Jiang Cheng looks at him, his expression telling him there's someone he thinks they should judge together. He smiles. No. This is not like his past life.
How to prove it, though? Wei Ying sighs. Jin Guangyao was clever to use a poison from Yunmeng, but Wei Ying is no simpleton, and he is already steps ahead.
Wei Ying rises, extending his cup to Jin Zixuan, "Clan-Leader-Jin. I look forward to seeing the good things you do as Sect Leader. I can imagine no one better for the job, and congrats on your engagement."
Jin Zixuan stammers through thanks and a bow, and Wei Ying resists the urge to snort. It's perhaps the nicest thing he's said to Jin Zixuan. The other man doesn't know what to do with it.
Wei Ying is impressed. Jin Guangyao didn't so much as twitch.
"Likewise." Jin Zixuan gestures to Lan Zhan, "You two look great together."
Warmth stirs in Wei Ying's chest. Jin Zixuan is positively glowing. Jin Guangshan towered over everyone on his throne, but Jin Zixuan fills the space with grace Wei Ying never knew he could hold. He's shockingly humble, and he swipes his thumb over his fiance's hand, and his eyes soften. Selfishly, Wei Ying's mind uses the sight to fill in the blanks of what he'd picture in his dark and dingy cave; drowning in solitude, he'd imagine his Shije and Jin Zixuan safe and sound and sappy with love.
