Seeing Lan Wangji look at him with hatred and disgust, hearing him beg over and over to return to Gusu for punishment, to have to push him away like everyone else was exhausting.

Lan Zhan was the only person who kept trying to break through the wall Wei Ying had created between himself and the world. Lan Zhan wouldn't stop tearing the wall apart leaving Wei Ying to pick up the pieces so he could hide once more.

My heart is fragile, Lan Zhan... please stop breaking it.

Lan Wangji gulped, listening to Wei Ying's thoughts as he lay under the covers, moonlight pouring in through the open window and casting shadows onto his gloomy features.

Lan Wangji...

The boy always had a way of making Wei Ying feel small. Not inferior. Just small.

He made Wei Ying feel exposed, like under his piercing gaze he couldn't hide and the constant prods and pokes to his secrets made him not want to any longer.

The little touches and whispers of his name made Wei Ying want to scream, Why?! Why could Lan Zhan affect him in this way?!

Why did Lan Wangji have to steal his heart?!

Wei Ying sighed heavily, closing his eyes tight.

Tomorrow, the final battle took place and that was all that mattered. He was likely to die on the battlefield anyway which was his plan in the first place, to take his secrets to the grave.

Wei Ying snorted, "To being a liar." He whispered as if cheering with alcohol, his breath evening out a few minutes later.

***

Lan Wangji was tempted to cry, listening to those thoughts. That Wei Ying had planned on dying on the battlefield just so he could keep a secret, just so his shidi wouldn't suffer.

But he really wanted to cry knowing that that wasn't the only reason, Wei Ying desired death, wanted to rest and he could feel it.

After watching Wei Ying struggle to control the aching resentment, thirsty for freedom and trying to burst free, the boy jumped to a pillar and lifted his Chengqing to his lips.

He had been using it to deflect attacks the entire time he was fighting, Lan Zhan, however, would always be there to protect him.

Continuing to play, Wei Wuxian wanted to breathe in relief even as a small amount of the demons inside were unleashed, pinning the puppets against each other.

Ignoring the shocked looks he received, Wei Ying continued to play until someone behind him yelled, "You!"

Wei Ying snapped his eyes open and lowered his flute, tucking it back into his belt he turned with a cocky smirk, "Wen-Clan-Leader." He grinned, bowing his head.

His family, both versions, stiffened, watching him smirk calmly in the presence of a psycho maniac.

Wen Ruohan glared, "Where did you get your Yin Iron?!" He screamed, fists clenched and trembling in fury.

Wei Ying hesitated for a moment, hands filling with the resentful metal, before an empty smirk formed on his lips.

His family were disturbed by the lack of fear or even cautious in his eyes as he taunted Wen Ruohan. It was then made painfully obvious that he truly had planned on dying on the battlefield, however, how relaxed he seemed to be seeing as he was about to die, was heart-crushing.

"I've been dead once," Wei Ying smiled as if not broken inside and out from that death, "We, of course, came from hell."

Weh Ruohan glared, jaw shaking and complexion turning red, they wondered if they were about to see Wei Ying die again, "Giv-"

"And Wen-Clan-Leader," Wei Ying cut him off, "This isn't Yin Iron, this is the Stygian. Tiger. Amulet."

Wen Ruohan gasped, extending his hand and calling for Wei Ying's neck, the boy was quick to discard the amulet into the air as he was pulled, shrinking the distance.

Wei Ying choked when his throat hit Wen Ruohan's palm, holding back a shiver as his grimy fingers wrapped around his neck, wanting to crush it.

Sensing his limited time, Wei Ying willed the amulet to release it's puppets, sending every last one within the Nightless City battlefield and out, ones he couldn't even see, crashing to the ground.

Wen Ruohan gaped, in shock. He'd spent over a year perfecting those puppets and this one boy, swordless, skeletal, and killable, had destroyed them in a second without even blinking an eye.

Wen Ruohan then turned back with anger and curiosity in his eyes, he was losing, and this boy might just save him, "Stygian Tiger Am- ugh!" Wen Ruohan was interrupted by a sword piercing through his heart and blood running down his chin.

His body went limp, dragged into death, he released the tight grip on Wei Ying's throat and the both of them tumbled to the floor.

Only one lived.

Only one was caught.

"Lan Zhan..."

Lan Wangji shivered, hearing his name being called so intimately, seeing the boy he loves deflate in his arms and go slack as if trusting him and only him to keep him safe.

Wei Ying fell unconscious, surrendering to the temptation to do so, in. his. arms.

With that action, it was clear Wei Ying had trusted him with his unaware body.

Lan Zhan smiled watching, hoping that with the following memories, he doesn't fail his soulmate.
