Wei Ying gnawed at the skin around his nails drawing blood as he sat in the corner of the carriage, his knees tucked into his chest.
He had had an hour-long panic attack this morning while hiding in the bathroom which he was later lectured for, knowing today he was returning to the Burial Mounds.
He could not stop shaking, he looked like he was in freezing snow and not blazing sun.
His family watched him worriedly as he made his fingers bleed, shaking madly as he looked out of the carriage, counting down the seconds before they were at the Burial Mounds.
When they arrived at the foot of it, the carriage stopped, the simple movement making Wei Ying jump and stiffen.
Lan Zhan gulped, gently taking Wei Ying's small hands, "We're here..." He murmured, rubbing his thumb over the soft bony hand in his.
Wei Ying gulped, looking at the floor of the carriage and refusing to move, he knew he should, he knew lives depended on this but... the thought of walking into that place in the state it was in... in the state he was in.
Wei Ying shook his head, turning away again.
Yanli pursed her lips, blinking to stop tears from polluting her eyes, "A-Xian... Xianxian we will be right there beside you... every step of the way..." She reassured, placing hands on his knees.
Wei Ying's lips trembled, Get. Up! He screamed internally, forcing himself to stand he clung onto the sides of the carriage, stepping down with shaky legs only for his knees to buckle.
Lan Xichen, who had stepped out first, gasped and caught him, wrapping an arm around his waist to keep him upright as he regained feeling in his legs.
Jiang Cheng closed his eyes, unable to watch such a painful sight.
Lan Zhan jumped down beside him, taking over the role of supporting him, "Wei Ying..." He murmured, eyebrows knitting together in pain when Wei Ying grabbed one of his shoulders and the lapels of his robes, breathing rapidly.
"I-I-I'm O-Ok-kay..." Wei Ying stuttered, his chest tightening.
Lan Zhan pursed his lips, his heart aching to watch Wei Ying tremble so much, eyes on the floor as they walked into the Burial Mounds.
The deeper in they ventured, the thicker the air got with resentment and the harder it became to see each other.
Jiang Fengman took his wife's hand who took Jiang Cheng's, Yanli took her brother's hands to keep them close as Wei Ying tightly held Lan Zhan's, and Lan Xichen wrapped his hand around his little brother's arm, "Just a little further, Wei-Gongzi, we need to get to where the resentful energy is thickest to be able to control it again."
Wei Ying didn't respond, just pushed his face into Lan Zhan's arm, resisting the urge to bite the fabric so he wouldn't start screaming.
With every step, a sickening crunch would fill the air, along with the relentless sound of whispers and screams slithering beside their ears and the wind racing through their hair.
Yanli gulped, her eyes watering as she wondered just how her brother survived this.
It felt like hours before they reached the centre of the Burial Mounds where the air was so thick with resentment they couldn't see anything at all
Wei Ying whimpered at every scream, terror twisting in his stomach and unable to stop himself he separated from his family, covering his ears and falling to the ground in a ball as he began to weep.
