The next day, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan sat side-by-side surrounded by other disciples, they weaved a lantern together.
Around them, Jiang Cheng, Yanli, Wen Qing, Wen Ning, and Nie Huaisang sat like a protective circle, hiding Wei Ying from threats or curious, judgmental gazes.
Wei Ying didn't care for the looks he was receiving, it was guaranteed after what he had attempted, "Lan Zhan," He called with a smile, picking up his paintbrush, "Last time I painted a bunny, do you have any suggestions for this time?" He asked.
Lan Zhan grinned, "Two bunnies." He replied, making Wei Ying giggle ever so softly.
Wei Ying began to do just that, skillfully painting two bunnies, both with differently placed ribbons.
Yanli smiled, nudging Wen Qing who also grinned at the display, 'So cute...' Yanli mouthed.
Wen Qing nodded in agreement, 'Indeed!' She mouthed back, crafting a single lantern, she and Jiang Yanli weaved it together, both painting one side.
On one side, Yanli painted a Lotus, and on the other, Wen Qing painted a rose, a carnation, and an aster.
Wei Ying hummed softly, quietly under his breath a familiar tune he had thought of to lul himself to sleep on nights he felt coldest. The melody itself was almost enough to substitute for a warm embrace, it couldn't quite keep him warm... but it made him feel warm.
Lan Zhan's heart skipped a few beats, recognising the tune as Wangxian.
When it came time to set the lanterns off, Lan Zhan intertwined he and Wei Ying's fingers as they did, smirking at how flustered the other boy became just at his touch.
Wei Ying's experiences had made him weak to physical touch, it had become so foreign in his last few years that any affection, any intimacy had a large effect on him.
Lan Zhan's soul ached at that thought, Wei Ying I will keep you warm. He thought, watching as Wei Ying adamantly avoided eye contact with him, but refused to part from his hand.
Yanli and Wen Qing shared another giggle, linking their arms as they all walked back... this time... ignoring Jin Zixuan and his rude comments.
Yanli was too engrossed in her gossip with Wen Qing to care anyway.

The next day, Wei Ying's hands trembled as they set out for the cave of the Tortious Of Slaughter. He really... really wasn't looking forward to grasping that sword again... to... to becoming a puppet of the Stygian Tiger Amulet.
Luckily though, this time, he wouldn't have strings it could pull on, that it could threaten him with.
Sighing, Wei Ying walked closer to his brother, smiling when an arm wrapped around his waist.
He was also heavily protected this time around, on this mission was Lan Zhan, Wen Qing, Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng, Wen Ning, and Lan Xichen.
He pursed his lips, "We're going to have to sneak around, the cave is heavily hidden by forest but it'll be difficult to get in and out unnoticed... however, if we just don't kill the tortious this time it should be fine."
