She walked into the Emerald City bar and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too crowded. She was impressed that there were bars here that were entirely non smoking. She made her way to the bar and sat down away from other people. Almost immediately, the bartender came over to take her order. She told him and he asked to see her ID. She sighed and showed it to him. She was forever being carded and didn't take offense. She knew they were just protecting their business license. After scrutinizing it thoroughly, the bartender named Joe poured her a shot of tequila.
"Straight tequila, really? You are going to be sorry in the morning."
She gave him a small smile that lit up her face, "I'm always sorry in the morning, but tomorrow I start my first day at work, so keep them coming."
She sat and swirled the amber liquid around in the glass and took a small sip. It burned her throat and she fought the urge to choke a little. She knew most people tossed shots back, but she liked to slowly sip it. She was extremely nervous about tomorrow. Tonight's mixer had been a little scary and she hoped tomorrow went better. She had gotten to the mixer late because of the phone call from the nursing home. Her Mother was having a bad day and they wanted her to stop over before the mixer. She had spent more time there than she had wanted, trying to get her Mother's agitated state to go away.
By the time she had gotten to the mixer, people had already broken off into little groups and as usual, she felt out of place. She found the Chief and introduced herself quickly and then made a bee line for the exit. Everyone looked so confident and sure of themselves. She had felt like a lost lamb. On the way out the door, a small Asian women had cornered her and introduced herself. Her name was Cristina Yang and she wanted to meet all the female surgical interns. She had actually been quite nice and they had a quick laugh when she looked her up and down and guessed where she got her clothes and how much they cost. She said it was a gift. They talked about meeting in the locker room the next day.
As she sat there and sipped her drink, she tried to give herself a little pep talk. Maybe they would accept her here. Maybe she would meet people who could be friends. Maybe her self confidence and self esteem wouldn't be in the preverbal toilet. Maybe she would meet somebody who would love her. She didn't notice that the bar had started to get busy and two handsome guys had walked in and sat at a small table behind her. She was too busy being nervous about tomorrow and what she was going to have to prove all over again.
Derek and Mark were sitting at a small table watching the activities of the bar. They had been in Seattle for one week looking at apartments and condos. They had come up empty so far and were getting frustrated. Housing in Seattle was a nightmare. They ordered drinks and started sharing their experiences about the mixer. They had split up to cover the most ground and were now exchanging vital information.
"So that Burke, he seems like a pompous ass. What did you think?"
Derek replied, "He is okay. Maybe a little full of himself. Probably just like us. Trying to appear confident when we all are scared shitless. Not too much of a conversational sort."
Mark asked, "What about that Asian woman Yang, was it? I think she is going to be a little aggressive bitch. We may have to look out for her."
"She did have a pinched looked about her." Derek said laughing.
"How about that tall redhead. She was something. Did you see her legs?"
"Yeah, and just about everything else. Not exactly a classy or conservative dresser. She also seemed a little bit dim. I think her name was Montgomery." Derek answered back.
Mark replied, "Who cares, if those legs are wrapped around you."
Derek and Mark had gotten to the mixer early and left late. They had both been tied up with people.
"I met five out of six female surgical interns. How about you?" asked Derek
"Me too. Probably the sixth one has already bailed. Probably knocked up or something."
"Mark....You are going to have to rein in your sexist attitude. They are lots of great female doctors. You are going to have to work with them the rest of your life. Get used to it man."
"You are right Derek. You know I only talk this way with you. Are you looking at that little blonde at the bar? She is turning down guy's right and left. Is she our girl?"
Derek had been looking at the slight girl at the bar. He could only see the back of her, but her dress looked sexy and she had long shapely legs dangling from the bar stool with little strappy sandals on. She had long hair softly curling down her back. He was curious as to what she looked like. From the number of men swarming around her, she must be something special.
Derek smiled and told Mark, "I don't think her hair color is blonde. More reddish. I can't tell in this light. But she looks hot from the back."
"She could be a dog from the front. Well, who goes first?"
"What are the parameters?" asked Derek
"Ten minute time limit to get her to leave with one of us. It can be on the premise or off and since we don't know what she looks like, if all we get is oral sex, that will count."
Derek pulled out a coin and told Mark to call it to see who went first. They had this game they played since they were old enough to go into bars. They would usually pick out the most attractive girl and bet who she would go home with. In the beginning, their stats were not that great. But over the course of time, and as they had grown into their looks, their stats greatly improved. It didn't hurt that they both were charming and good looking and never pressured anyone to leave with them. They were very attractive men with strong libidos who loved women.
Derek flipped the coin and Mark said, "Heads."
It came up heads and Derek was a little disappointed. He said "Good luck man." Not really meaning it, of course.
Mark made his way over to where the little blonde was seated and sat down next to her.
