The following day, Derek and Meredith were walking in the parking lot. As soon as they got to the door they dropped hands.
She said, "You know. You keep taking everything on faith. How do you know what's real and what's not?"
Derek replied, "You just do. You know some people would call this a relationship. The kind where you exchange keys... leave your tooth brush over."
Meredith giggled and said, "We live together already and you and your hair products are all over my bathroom. Who? Who would call it that?"
"Me. I would."
"And I'm supposed to believe you?"
The got in the crowded elevator and he breathed her in. He whispered in her ear, "Yes. You are supposed to believe me."
She giggled and she felt everyone in the elevator look at her. She bit her lower lip and felt a blush creep onto her cheeks. She did trust Derek completely. She was thinking back to last night. The ice cream adventure had gone really well. She always was a fast learner. She licked her lips remembering the pleasure she was able to give Derek not knowing what the fuck she was doing. She stifled a loud giggle. Poor Mark! She hoped he got some sleep.
They got off on their floor and walked quickly to the locker room and changed. Preston, Cris, and Mark were scheduled to come in later. Addison came in just before Bailey with a handful of papers and they both ignored her. Someone had put pictures of the books coming out of her locker and hitting her all over the hospital. It was days after the incident and they just seemed to multiple. Dr. Bailey came in and said, "Shepherd. You are with Dr. Osborne today. Check in with him. Montgomery. You are with Mr. Martin. You will present on rounds. He has Rathke's Cleft Cyst. Do you know what that is?"
Addison shook her head and Dr. Bailey sighed, "It's a congenital tumor on his pituitary gland. Grey. You are on Esme Sorrento. Post-op from gall bladder surgery. A very sweet little older lady. Let's go round!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meredith stood on the bridge and watched as an orderly pushed Mrs. Sorrento to the elevator as her husband walked next to her. She had been post -op from gall bladder surgery and Meredith had spent most of the day with her. She had been the one to tell her about the cancer.
Derek walked up next to her and asked, "What are you looking at beautiful?" Meredith had a wistful look on her face.
"See that couple waiting for the elevator?"
"Yeah. The one holding hands."
"They have been married for almost sixty years. Their anniversary is next month and she has cancer. She only has a few months to live."
"That's bad. But if they had sixty good years?"
"She wants to go to Venice and get in a gondola and go under the bridge of Sighs."
Mrs. Sorrento gets up out of the wheelchair and Mr. Sorrento takes her hand as they get in the elevator.
Derek asks, "What's the significance of the bridge of Sighs?"
"They say if you ride under the bridge of Sighs, you're together for eternity."
Meredith had her hands on the rail and Derek rubbed his finger against her's. He said softy, "I always thought I would honeymoon in Paris, the city of lights. But Venice sounds nice too." Meredith twisted her little finger around his.
Meredith smiled at him and thought back to a teacher she had when she had been forced to read Romeo and Juliet and then had to play the part in a school play. Mrs. Snyder said that she'd be lucky if she found that kind of passion with someone. And that if she did, they'd be together forever. Meredith thought back and remembered telling her she would take fate into my own hands.
