After we walk back to the car and drop off the picnic stuff, Hardin takes my hand and we begin walking back toward the park. Instead of going to the spot we had our picnic at, we start walking up a hill. When we get to the top, Hardin pulls me over to sit on a bench with him.
"What are we doing here, Hardin?"
"I read this is the best spot to watch the sunset. I thought you might like that, Tess."
"Really? That sounds so romantic," I say as I turn to look up at him. "What a great idea!"
Hardin and I pass the time waiting for sunset by joking around and taking more photos together. We talk about how much fun this trip was and how much we're going to miss it.
"I'm definitely going to miss being here with you, but I really can't wait to make love to my beautiful girlfriend in our own bed," he says as he nuzzles into my neck.
"Me neither." I blush. "Look, Hardin!" I say as I point to the sky. It's lit up in all shades of yellow, orange and red.
"I see," he chuckles and wraps his arm around me.
I take out my phone and take a few photos. I smile to myself when I see Hardin do the same. I turn to say something to him and notice he's looking at me and taking more sneaky photos of me. "Hardin!"
"I can't help it, baby! You look so excited. I want to remember this."
I give him the biggest fake smile as he keeps snapping photos.
"Smile for real? Please?" he begs.
"Fine!" I smile at the camera and Hardin's grin grows.
"Beautiful. My new wallpaper."
"Stalker," I giggle.
"Tess, I wanted to give something to you before it gets too dark."
"Oh, okay."
Hardin gets up off the bench and pulls a little black box out of his jacket pocket. My heart starts beating faster as I watch him start to kneel down on one knee in front of me. "Hardin... Wh-what are you doing?" I stutter in a panicked voice.
He stands back up and quietly chuckles. "Okay, I'm only kidding about proposing."
"You asshole!" I shout as I stand up and hit his arm.
"You should have seen your face."
"I hate you!"
"I'm sorry, Tess. But I really do want to give you this."
"I don't want your gift," I huff and cross my arms.
"Tess, I'm sorry. Maybe that was a bad joke."
"You think?!" I shout as I turn away from him.
He grabs my arm to turn me to look at him. "Please open it?" he begs.
We sit back down on the bench and I take the box from him. When I open it, I see another charm for my bracelet. I pick it up and look at it admiringly.
"I wanted you to always remember this trip and how special this cabin will always be to us," he says with sincerity in his voice.
I turn the charm over in my fingers to get a good look at it. It's the cutest little log cabin charm. "It's really perfect, Hardin. I could never forget this trip and everything that happened between us, but this is the perfect reminder that I can always carry with me. Thank you so much."
"Does that mean I'm forgiven?"
"I guess so," I say to torture him a little longer.
"Come on, let me see that beautiful smile?" he says as he tilts my chin to look up at him.
I can't help but smile at him.
"Thank you." He returns the smile.
"I love you, you big jerk."
"I love you, my sweet, beautiful girl."
I rest my head on his shoulder and we watch as the sun disappears behind the horizon.
When the sun has completely disappeared, Hardin takes my hand in his and we walk back to the car.
We drive back to the cabin and I can't help but feel sad as I stare down at my new charm.
"Are you okay, Tess?"
"Yeah. I just feel a little blue."
"Don't worry, Tess. I promise, we'll be back."
