I've been trying to make time to look through Royale's trunk. Instead of complaining about how I have no one to teach me I need to work on what I can learn by myself. Despite the dangers. If nothing else it's interested to imagine what his life was like.
I found a bunch of letters between Royale and a woman named Bessie Love. When he was teaching me I remember him mentioning a woman named Bessie Love a few times in relation to various magical capers. It always made him a little sad.
Reading through those letters was better than any audio book. It felt intrusive because some of it was very personal but would they be in there if I wasn't supposed to read it? I don't know how this trunk works. Maybe I should figure that out first thing, study the trunk itself.
Bessie and Royale were true friends, passionate lovers, and super magic crime fighters. What more could you want in a story? Since this trunk magically appeared by my car do I own the rights to that story? Probably not. There's always something that screws you.
Here's something else crazy, I think that Bessie Love is this Bessie Love - from Wikipedia; Bessie Love (born Juanita Horton) was an American-British actress who achieved prominence playing innocent young girls and wholesome leading ladies in silent and early sound films. Her acting career spanned eight decades, from silent film to sound film, including theatre, radio, and television.
According to Royale he met her when she was facing down some kind of creatures that she named the Sharp Dressed Men. They seduced and murdered a series of young women in the 1920s until she stopped them with a little assist from Royale.
It's not clear to me from the notes if these Sharp Dressed Men were serial killing mages or something else. Vampires? Demons? Shadowmen? Reptilians? That's a common frustration I have with Royale's stories, he was writing to try and illuminate but I think he couldn't help but assume a certain level of magic knowledge in the reader.
Monsters or myths or whatever you want to say is something I think about a lot now. If magic is real what else is going on out there?
