In home economics the next day, Y/n's partner was Xiangling- who was in fact, now missing the pinky on her right hand from a tragic rabbit-meat accident.
The first thing the dark-haired girl had huffed was, "thank the gods, I'm a lefty."Y/n chatted with the younger girl as they mixed up eggs and flour and flicked it around.
Secretly, she felt sweat trickling down her neck as the young principal perched on a seat in the back of the class. Dainsleif had his chin resting on his palm as was looking as though he was slowly dozing off, his head jerking back every once in a while to attempt in waking himself up.
... Poor guy, Y/n couldn't even imagine herself being a principal. She felt pity.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the end of the school day, Dainsleif completed his duties and walked home. His earbuds blasting music as he attempted to drown out the enthusiasm of the students surrounding him.
...Until he crashed into a short red-haired boy. Green eyes widened as he bent over at the waist, "I'm so sorry!"
Then the boy paused, "are you Mr. Dainsleif?""I am." Dainsleif eyed the boy, he seemed innocent enough and didn't look like a murderer.
"Well in that case- I am from the detective agency and have been planted in this high school for the final years of my education!" He said it with a flourish.
"... And?" Dainsleif narrowed blue eyes.
"Aaannndd... I need to you fill my forms of admission out- being the principal and all... And, psst... We're on the same side here!" The boy acted out his words dramatically and thrust wet crinkled papers into the principal's hands.
Dainsleif sighed in exasperation. "Well, if you are a junior detective-"
"-That is right!"
"-I will fill you in so you can come to school tomorrow, prepared." Dainsleif sighed again at the boy's interruption.
"Who are you again?"~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Again, Dainsleif left the school- this time much later and collapsed on the bench at the bus stop, ten minutes before the final trip.
Then a perky voice lulled him from fairyland. "Hello, Mr. Dainsleif."
'I swear, if it's that boy...'
He made eye contact with a h/c haired girl, who was grinning ear to ear.Her face and hair were wet and dripped onto her uniform. "Hello, miss?"
"It's Y/n. It's a pleasure to meet you mr principal."
"Ugh... You don't need to suck up to me." He just wanted to sleep... As an agent, jobs weren't actually this long- he completed them swiftly and lacked energy to last the day, surviving on coffee and energy drinks.
"I'm not!" The girl then grinned even wider, "I'm just curious about that taser and handgun you have..."
He jolted in surprise. He had been so cautious!
The girl giggled, "everyone saw it when you were 'observing' home ec. Your coat had ridden up and the reason nobody was bothering you today was because they were scared!"
His jaw dropped, "you really think so? I mean- I didn't come here to scare kids, only to protect them!"
The girl giggled once again and sat at the stop next to him, "Mr Dainsleif, how old are you?"
He retained a stoic expression, "you will never find out."
She found that amusing.
"Well, goodbye mr principal, I need to get home and wash the chlorine from my hair," she grinned and began to walk across the road.
Dainsleif's sensitive hearing then picked up a roar and he fling himself from the bench. "Miss Y/n!"
Just as the yellow vehicle turned the corner Dainsleif used his assassin's skill set to leap across the footpath and onto the road as bright lights came into view. He slammed into Y/n clutched her waist as the girl gave a yelp of surprise and rolled onto the footpath on the other side. He held her head to his chest as they both breathed shakily.
Y/n spluttered, "why is this always happening to me." Her face flushed and she covered her cheeks.
"Ah, no- it's okay. You're okay." Dainsleif touched her cheek. "This is why I'm here, to save people."
"Are you gonna tell me how old you are, now- this would feel creepy if you are too old... But, you don't look it."
"Thanks? Um, I'm eighteen..."
"Damn, that's young." Y/n stopped shaking and clambered from his arms, "thank you anyway!"
He sat crouched on the footpath motionless and pressed cold fingers to cheeks that were quickly gathering heat. Embarrassed, he slumped down and dropped his head onto his hands.
Dainsleif then realised he had missed the bus.
Yet another perky voice pulled him from his drowsy state. "Hello Mr Dainsleif!"
He groaned and turned away, "Paimon, don't..."
The fairy drifted closer, "what happened? You're all scraped up."
"Hmm... I missed the bus."
"Actually," Paimon started, "you look like you got hit by it."
He released a humourless laugh. "Please don't."
Paimon began to back away, "you crazy, man. All detectives are crazy! I regret working with self-destructive, obsessive, loony people who think they can save this godforsaken school." She sighed and rubbed her temple, "want to come home with me?"
Dainsleif and Paimon ended up walking home together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/n heard a ring and rushed down the stairs to were she had placed her school bag on the kitchen table. Yanking out her phone, she brought it to her ear.
A voice on the other end crackled.
"Err... Hello?" Y/n paused after saying those words... She shouldn't have spoken!
The audio became slightly cleared, still lagging. "Hello, miss Y/n L/n. Please turn your camera on- and don't worry, I can't see you."
Y/n cautiously flicked on her camera and was met with the figure of a male, cast fully in shadows. "Miss L/n? Have you turned it on yet?"
"..."
"Hello?"
"Y-yes."
"That's good." He paused and pressed his palms together, "I have a deal to propose."
Y/n was curious. "What?"
He grinned and came closer to the screen, and Y/n still couldn't see his face. "You see. The deal- it's a quid-pro-quo situation. For me, you'll do something... And for you, I won't kill your dear friend!"
The man stepped out of the way to gesture at the limp form of Sangonomiya Kokomi strapped down to a chair and gagged- it wasn't needed though, she was still unconscious."Kokomi!" Come to mention it, she wasn't at swimming practise- and she was ALWAYS at swimming practise. Y/n blurted, "what do I do?"
"Step one: Don't get the cops involved."
"Ah- Yessir!" She was becoming more and more anxious.
"-Step two: don't tell anyone where you are going."
He grinned. "Bring no weapons."
"And if you know by now, great! But if you don't understand, I want to meet you at 54th Alleyway- outside the cafe. We can have a chat."Y/n was completely frozen. "... Yes..."
He grinned and gestured to Kokomi, "remember what- who's on the line, sweetheart."
The call cut off and Y/n slumped to the floor.
From her bag she yanked out her diary where everyone had written the emergency number of their new principal.
Technically, he wasn' a cop- AND, she wasn't telling him where she was going."Mr Dainsleif?"
"Yes, it's me." The blond sounded more alert than he had at the bus stop.
"I have a favour to ask you..."
