Chapter 70: The truth

"POLICE!" Rodriguez shouted come in the abandoned building having found Will's car in front. "Mr. Calaway..don't do that.." Rodriguez still says his gun to Mark in case he tries to press the accelerator to run over Will who is banged up and tied up against a pole. "I know you want revenge but don't do this..let us take care of it.." Rodriguez said calmly to Mark who still had his eyes on Will, his hand on the wheel, his foot on the accelerator and the other hand on the handbrake ready to lower it to rush Will.

"It's my turn to take care of it.." Mark said coldly to Rodriguez in response, still looking at Will, the sergeant stretched his arm towards his men not to move, then looked at Mark. "Please..don't be silly..stop the engine.." the sergeant asks Mark but he still doesn't listen, he roars the engine ready to charge Will. "Mark..don't do that! think about us!" Lini shouted for Mark to hear, tried to pass but the police held her back. "Think of our family that we just built...I love you Mark..Don't do that.." Lini begged crying but he didn't hear anything wanting his revenge to be done, he made the engine growl once again. Lini managed to pass through the police to stand in front of Mark's 4x4.

"Miss McClay get off!" Cried the sergeant seeing that Lini got in front of the car knowing that a man who is filled with rage and revenge like Mark, could kill anyone even the one who he loves. But Lini doesn't listen to him, she looks at Mark in tears, begs him to stop the engine. "Mark honey, please..think about us..we love you.." she said, her tears streaming down, causing Mark's heart to clench, his eyes which were full of anger and of revenge begins to disappear. The car's engine cuts out before the police call for an ambulance for Will before going to arrest him while Mark is in his car, head against the steering wheel trying to calm himself down. Lini walks over to the driver's side door, opens the door before wrapping her arms around Mark's waist.

After going to the hospital for Will, he ends up in the interrogation room with Sergeant Rodriguez. Distraught but alive, he has broken jaw, a broken nose and a few cracked ribs and a broken leg. Lini is behind the tinted window listening to what Will is going to reveal, accompanied by Mark who didn't want to let her go through this alone. She should have listened to Mark a long time ago.. but why? why did he do that? he was his best friend..he covered for him many times, paid his fines when his colleagues stopped him and he was in the red at the bank...

"Okay, Will, I'm not going to cut corners, you better not lie to me since now we have proof that you are behind this...I want the truth and ALL the truth." Sergeant Rodriguez looks Will in the eye. "What really happened on May 14, 1997?" the sergeant asked, tapping his pen against the iron table, watching Will curiously as he looked down.

Flashback: May 14, 1997.

I knew Josh had gone to the donut shop that night. It was his habit every Friday before he came home, we argued because I had debts to him that I no longer repay. "I won't give you any more money Will! you're coping with your debts!" Said Josh almost shouting and he went to his car. I..it pissed me off so I took the van, pulled up in front of him and...killed him. I started the van at full speed and accidentally knocked over the two people. It wasn't intentional.

Will looks at his hands before looking at Sergeant Rodriguez who is listening attentively. "You weren't telling the truth." Said Rodriguez knowing he wasn't telling the whole truth. "It was premeditated the murder of Josh, you stole the van from your own garage, you know Josh used to go to that store so you put the van in the same parking lot as Josh and the next night you 'have killed!' Said Rodriguez while looking at him, Will looks around refusing to look at him. "Why did you kill him? Why did you kill this man who was your friend, a father and husband?" Rodriguez asked, wanting to know why? what is the real reason for his acting out? "He had everything.." Will said staring into space. "A wife, a daughter, a beautiful house..his dream job..I..I wanted this life.." He admits, Rodriguez writes on his report what Will says. "I believed that if I killed him and got closer to Lini, she would love me and I would have a better place in my life."

Asshole..Mark thought, destroying a family to have the life of your best friend is odious. Mark listens carefully to the confessions of the man he has been looking for for two years. He could hear the sniffles of Lini crying silently, he looks at her before taking her in his arms, reassuring her.

"You did all this to take your best friend's wife?" Asked Rodriguez, wanting to be sure of his words for the trial. "Yes..then afterwards...I did everything so that Lini was close to me..I was there as a support for her...babysit Agnes when she was at work..this year...I felt that she and I were close so.. I wanted to make her fall in love with me by protecting her, taking care of her.." He admits before looking to the right knowing that there are people there. he looks at him through the window. "So you decided to send threatening letters, mystery calls and cover our tracks by blowing up the house while you were with Lini to look good on us." Rodriguez said before Will nodded in confirmation. "But you intrigued us just before that. I suspected you were lying to us, I had planned to see you and ask you the same questions I asked you in the hospital." Admitting Rodriguez looking him straight in the eye. "I hope your last weekend was good for you because you're not going to get out of jail." he added.

"Mr. Will Rifte, I am arresting you for the first degree murder of Josh McClay and the deaths of Jessie Calaway and her son Calvin Calaway. An attorney will be assigned to you at your trial..." Rodriguez said as he handcuffed the Will's hands behind his back. A dull noise is heard, Mark looks beside him and rushes on Lini who has just fallen. Mark fended off the officers trying to wake her up and hug her before leaving the room.

Lini wakes up a few minutes later and the first thing she sees is Mark who has a goblet of water in a bath and a book to give him some fresh air. "How are you darling?" he asked, gently stroking her face, worrying. "I...I'm fine.." She said before accepting the cup that Mark handed her. She leans against him looking at the floor, thinking about everything that happened. "I'm sorry Mark.." she said. She's sorry she didn't listen to him when he said Will was hiding things. She's sorry for believing him. She's sorry about all of this. Mark cups her face in his hands, wiping away her remaining tears with his thumbs. "Don't be. You just trusted the wrong people." He said before kissing her forehead tenderly.

The door opens and Lini and Mark see the police, Sergeant Rodriguez holding Will's arm tightly as he walks towards the cars, Will glances at Lini who has a look of sadness mixed with anger. She still can't believe it was Will who was behind it all. "Come let's go home and rest." Said Mark when Will and the cops left, he took her by the hand heading outside.
