The time was 1:20, everyone had gone home and me and my brother were eating some watermelon downstairs since we couldn't sleep.
"What did you think about those kids next to the mosque?" My brother asked.
"The kids? They were very cute and you were good with them, you know." I reply, smiling at him.
"It was fun playing basketball with them. I thought about it..." He trailed off, looking to me.
"About what?" I ask, putting my hair behind my ear.
"The kids. Khalil told me they were often left alone by their parents and often came there to play. I think I'm gonna start something for them." He replied.
"Like a charity or fund?" I ask, putting some watermelon in my mouth.
"Maybe, I dunno. The plans will be put in place later but for now they deserve somewhere that they can get peace from." Samir says with a sigh.
Wow my brother actually was moved from before. He had a solemn look to him and I said, "They do, I'm glad you've thought about this."
He nods thoughtfully and we both became silent after that.
"So, you happy then?" Samir asks, a few moments later.
"About?" I shot back.
"Everything, the Nikkah tomorrow?" He says, looking down and not at me.
"Yeah, yeah I am, Alhamdulilah." I reply, thinking about the letters he wrote for me.
"You deserve it, lil sis. After everything that's happened you deserve this more than anyone. The house is gonna be empty without you though." He sighs, putting his fork down.
"Wow, look at you complimenting me for the first time!" I say sarcastically, making him let out a chuckle.
"Shush, you rat. Amannah's already gone and now you're leaving too. Dunno how both my sisters got married before me." He jokes, finally looking back up to me with a sad smile.
Samir surprisingly did look like he was gonna cry and I felt bad as I realised I never actually spent a long time away from home.
"Samir, stop, you're gonna make me cry now." I reply, putting my hands on my face.
"Yallah I didn't say that to make you cry, Noori." He says, standing up and walking to me.
"Well you did." I respond, feeling a few tears come out.
"That's enough." Samir replied, putting his arms around me into a hug.
Me and my brother both stay like that for a few moments before we hear my dad walking into the living room.
"What's going on here? Is something wrong?" Abba asks, adjusting his lungi.
"No, no, Abba. She just got a little emotional." Samir says, ruffling my hair.
"You do know that you can come over any time you want. This is still your home." Abba says to me before making one his funny faces he used to do when I was younger to make me stop crying.
"Abba!" I reply as he wraps me in his embrace.
"Anyways, if Khalil ever does anything wrong you just ring me and I'll be there in seconds." Samir says, making me giggle.
