Chapter 41

"D-Do you know me po?"

"Uhh," she looked away and tried to find the right words to say. "Nabasa ko sa name tag mo." She pointed my name tag. "Tara, dito tayo sa gilid."

She carried me in her arms and we went back to the waiting shed. Papa said big girl na ako but I didn't mind her carrying me. I sat on the bench with her. She kept caressing my hair and touching my cheek. Mima James always tells me that I'm cute, maybe the stranger thinks that I'm cute too.

"Bakit nandito ka sa labas ng school, hm? May hinihintay ka ba?" She asked while still touching my face.

"I'm waiting for my papa." I answered. She seems nice naman.

"You should wait for him inside. It's dangerous here."

I shook my head. "Ayoko po."

"Bakit naman?"

"I'm the only one without a parent there." I cried again. "I think my papa is not coming anymore."

She hugged me from my side and rested my head on her chest while caressing my head gently, trying to calm me down.

"Shh, tahan na, tahan na. Ano ba'ng meron? Bakit kailangan ng parents sa loob?" She asked.

I wiped my tears away with my fingers. "It's family day but I don't have family." I sobbed.

She shook her head. "Shh, no, that's not true. You have a family. Baka late lang yung papa mo."

Umiling ako. "He's always busy with work."

"How about your tito or tita? Or your grandparents?"

Umiling ulit ako. "M-My papa Van is working and tita Jing is at school. My mommy and d-daddy can't kasi they are old na po." I answered while sobbing.

She continued to stare at me.

"How about y-your m-mama?"

I was sobbing while moving my head up to face her.

"I'm not lucky enough to be with my mama."

Natahimik kami parehas ni miss stranger. Nakatitig lang siya sa 'kin. She looks sad too, just like me. Why? She's not lucky enough din ba to be with her mama?

"Sorry..." She whispered.

I looked at her again. "Bakit po?"

She shook her head. "Uh, I mean, s-sorry. Sorry for asking. I didn't know."

I just nodded and looked away again. Until I heard her sighed deeply.

"I'll be your parent."

I looked up at her. "Po?"

She smiled. "Walang pwedeng sumama sa'yo ngayon, 'di ba? Then I'll be your parent today. If it's okay with you. Sayang naman kung uuwi ka na."

I blinked. "But I don't know you po." Nagdadalawang isip ako.

She looked away and thought of something.

"Ice, ate Ice or tita Ice. Whatever you want to call me."

Ice? That's her name? It's so short.

Pag iisipan ko muna. Hmm, she seems nice naman. She helped me earlier and she even hugged me too. Mukhang hindi naman siya bad stranger kadi she's gentle with me eh. And I feel the same way I feel whenever I'm with papa Stell. Hindi naman siguro niya ako kukuhanin at dadalhin kung saan.
