When Hou said that it was time to go, I said my goodbyes to Lisa and my other friends. The Sages then opened some kind of portal that we walked through. Maybe "portal" isn't really the correct descriptor for it. It was like they ripped a hole in the universe that created a gate. Not in the usual sense of it being a gate to another world, it was an actual gate. There were heavy stone doors that just simply opened for us. I had never seen anything like it in my life.
I guess going between universes disorients the hell out of a person, cause my head was spinning after we walked through. It didn't help that once the doors closed behind us, my eyes were hit with blinding white. Not as in bright light, the walls and ceilings were so white it was blinding. My hands instinctively blocked my eyes.
"Give it a moment, you will get used to it." Hou chuckled.
"It's always rough on your first time," Yusuke added. "You should have seen Wonmin on his first time coming here."
Hearing that name, I looked to the new Sage.
I know what I heard, but there's no way I could believe it. How familiar he looked had been bothering me ever since I saw him. Hearing the name only confirmed it. But how? I have to be wrong.
He sensed my eyes attaching themselves to him, he had to. His eyes darted up, met mine, and then back forward. All without a single word, and an expression of guilt and shame. I wanted to reprimand him right there, but didn't have the chance to as Hou continued explaining the situation to me.
"We will escort you to the room you will be staying in while you are here. Don't worry, it will be the nicest accommodations that you will have ever seen." His voice didn't sound like someone who was facing world-ending events.
My eyes adjusted, and I was able to make out more details of this new place. The architecture was all white with some accents of what seemed to be blue pulsing energy that almost seemed to guide us from the strips along the floor. It was modern but at the same time ancient. Once I was happy with the adjustment to the brightness, we began our walk to my new home. The home I will live in for the next eighty-thousand years.
I wasn't sure what I expected, but it wasn't this. It was so quiet it was unnerving. The only noise was the sound of our feet connecting with the ground. The visual hadn't changed much either. The same bare, white walls. Even the doors that lead to other rooms blended in. So much so that if you weren't paying attention, you would miss them.
My attention eventually turned back to the seemingly guiding blue light that traveled in front of us.
"Confused?" Shou asked, breaking my attention from it.
"Not confused, just curious," I responded.
"To be expected." Yusuke reasoned." Your Sole fuels the blue light that you see guiding you. Every blue Sole activates it. Do not Fret. You won't confuse yours with another. You can only see your own. It works for everyone here within the Nexum."
"What exactly is this place?" Now I was confused.
"It is referred to as Nexum. The In Between. This is the eternal home of blue Sole users and Sages alike. This is where we go when we pass on." Shou explained.
